Is it possible that an ECU reset could cure this, and is it worth doing anyway seeing as it is so easy to do ? Question

Tried that, but now noticed the revs go up and down if I open the throttle a bit when stationary. If I try and hold the revs on 2000 for instance, they go to 2500, back to 1500, back to 2500 and so on ...

You could well be right SDK206. I will check it with my multimeter tomorrow if there's enough in the battery to register,otherwise I'll have to charge it again first.
