Happy to report fitting a new Bosch S4 has solved this problem.

Yeah I've just gone and taken another reading and it is a solid 11.95 so that's pretty dead then.

And I'm really relieved to hear the symptoms are inkeeping with a flat battery.

I thought it was 12v at rest and 14v running?

That oil indicator is about as much use as a snooze button on a smoke alarm.
Use the dip stick, preferably after the car has been standing for a decent period of time.
