Well after 3.5 years of ownership its time to say goodbye to the 180.
Thoroughly enjoyed driving it and after a shakey first year sorting it out ,it has run fairly reliably.

Yes you can get the manifold out in situ, did my old gti last year.
As suggested slacken the upper eng mount and rock the engine forward, you can just wriggle the manifold out.

You say the car overheated, has it warped the head?
Did you check it was flat?

As a rough cam timing check can you get it to tdc on cyl 1 or 4 ,observing piston through the plug hole and check the ...

Don't know the engine at all but assume it has hydraulic lifters?
Have the lifters expanded while the head and rockers were apart and now you have put together are holding the valves open?

Yep had the same on my old gti,one of the main relay wires had corroded to dust for about 50mm from the relay terminal.

Unless your dash is different to my old 2002 gti the gauge on the right is oil temp and generally follows water temp ,albeit slower to get up to temperature from cold.
It would usually sit about 90C ...

Another year gone, upto 113k miles now and still going well.
Only glitch this year was a burst rear brake pipe on the MOT test when they had it on the rollers.Had to drop the tank down to replace it ...

I thought I read somewhere on here you couldn't get the manifold out with the engine in place, but yes you are right should have fixed it yonks ago.
