Just in case anyone else wants help with this issue.
It's now sorted. It was as simple as torqueing up the wishbone ball joints VERY tight. When I did this, the play went immediately.
MOT now passed ...

The steering rack isn't tight. Or certainly doesn't feel tight, if that's what you mean?

To answer a few queries, the back-plates are ok. A little deteriorated but not enough to cause problems with movement of the shoes.
