You could remove the sender unit from the tank and repair the rheostat.
This would qualify as a cheap fix |

Unfortunately it's all about statistics.
The insurance companies know that there is as much chance of a 17 year old in a GT3 being able to drive it properly as there is him keeping it in his pants ... |

When you change from 55 to 50 you will reduce the sidewall height by about 1cm.
This will reduce the rolling radius of the tyre by about 10cm.
Therefore the speedo will be 3.3% less than indicated.

I'd go for a new battery too.
Back in the day when you could renew the acid in the cells and charge it you might have saved it but nowadays most are maintenance free and as such THROWAWAY. |

Sorry to hear that buddy....a litre every 3k is a tad ott.
If the smoke is blue you might be lucky and changing the valve stem seals would be my first choice.
If not then it's getting past the rings ... |
