Been informed by a local garage when the car was in for work that the front driver side coilover was making a spongey like noise when manouvering at low speeds.

Any ideas what it can be and how to cure the problem??

Yup, same for me. You have to spray some Molykote graphite grease on the contact point between spring (normal and helper) and spring plates. Never had any issue since 3 months.

Cheers mate

Can that be done on the car or will the whole shock have to be removed?

You can do it on the car, I lifted up mine, and with the help of a friend that pulled down the spring, compressing the helper I lubricated the upper seat, then I lubed the lower plates...
