I need a new set of tyres and im looking for a set of 195 55 15 are £330
But for the same make tyres but size 195 50 15 are £198
Thats saving me £132 thats alot of cash
Is it ok to reduce the profile size by 5? or will i have problems?

Yes that would be fine I have done the same, speedo will be about 4mph out but its not a problem.

Was talking to a guy a while ago and he was saying that the 55 profile is quite 'rare' as alot use the 50 and thats why tyres are cheaper, i was just not sure what difference it would do

i've been using 195/50's for over three years with no problem.
my 206 originally had 175/65/14's on. in my case, the 50's are actually closer to the overall circumference than 55's so affects my speedo less.

You don't need to calibrate the speedo youl bearly notice anything And all speedos are out anyway

When you change from 55 to 50 you will reduce the sidewall height by about 1cm.
This will reduce the rolling radius of the tyre by about 10cm.
Therefore the speedo will be 3.3% less than indicated.
IE when your speedo reads 30 you will actually be doing 29
when it reads 60 you will actually be doing 58
Maybe a slightly stiffer ride quality.......apart from that no problem.....

195 50 15 for me too....i didnt know that profile set your speedo out but meh. its a slightly stiff ride compared to the steels i was on before

Alright all, im glad i found this thread as have also been wondering about fitting 50s instead of 55s.
Slight evolution to the question as I already have 2x Pirelli P6000 195 55 15s but need 2 new tyres - so can I get 50's and run them ok with 55s? (obviously paired per axle)
If so, which is best to have up front?

Apart from a minor change to the speedo reading you will notice a slightly 'firmer' ride as the shallower tyre absorbs less of the bumps in the road.
Note...... use a sat nav, or similar, to check the speedo against the accurate sat nav reading
