last week when driving there was a crackling noise from under the steering wheel from the fusebox within seconds the car was filled with smoke Sad
jumped out and phoned breakdown service was towed home battery was disconnected for safety and advised to contact insurance co.

the car is a pug 206 xsi on a 2001 plate

insurance finally agreed to come n get the car assessed and then since the car has now been taken to a garage as I was told it had to have an electrical diagnostics and check to establish cause of the melted fuses/wires

question is I have phoned the garage today enquiring what is happening to be told that the car could be a write off

so what happens now ? I have never had to deal with insurance in this capacity before and unsure of where I stand

I have a £200 excess on insurance and was informed if a claim went through I would lose 2 years

Well if it was smoking it may have damaged some of the wiring in the car. I would not have though it would write the car off.

If the insurance company want to write the car off then there isnt much you can do. I would get the car fixed myself and not go through the insurance co as it doesnt sound like too much work to fix. New loom at the worst case.

If they do write the car off then they will give you the value of the car at the present time. So when u said in you insurance renewal its worth £2000 try knocking a few hundred off and that is what u will get for it. Unfortunatly you will loose you no claims bonus if you go down that route.

206 180 rally car in progress. I may not be perfect but there are parts of me that are f£%$ing brilliant

They will offer you about a grand for it tbh. They tried this with me. If you do go down the claim route and they offer you silly money, refuse it and then find examples of prices similar cars are going for. show them this and tell them to stop taking the p**s. I did this and got another cheque with a reasonable amount the next time.

It may work out cheaper in the long run to tell the insurance you don't want to claim and get your self a loom off ebay and fit that yourself. Big job, but it can be done over a weekend.

ICE goes in drinks. NOT in cars.

I would be thinking why the wires failed also? Somthing has caused them to get hot and melt,

Was it raining or had the engine washed recently?

UPDATE:

Car had been taken to a garage in York from the insurance company, they had it for 2 weeks then decided to tell me that the garage does not deal with electrical problems its a right farce I've been chasing the insurance co up every couple days to find out what the heck going on with my car anyway they told me that I had to arrange myself to get my car back from the garage in York ( I live in Manchester) and take it to my nearest pug dealer to be looked at at all at my expense, so I basically told them to just bring my car back home I will sort myself GRRRRRRRR. The garage who had my car phoned me and offered me £200 for the car hahaha what a joke.

Car now home so with nothing to lose the hubby and bro in law decided to have a look at it themselves and we found the fuse that had fired had just melted no other damage to surrounding area and it was the fuse for the left rear brake and additional brake that had gone.
So pulled the additional brake light out to check it and found bare wires that had been touching a screw so that was the problem so sorted the wiring and insulated that , changed the fuse and HEY PRESTO one working Pug again Smile
