When I turned the car on this morning, the temp gauge shot to the top and the STOP light was flashing. Obviously the water is still cold, and the radiator has kicked in. I'm guessing a sensor somewhere has failed. I've a 2001 1.6 16v preplex. Where should I be looking? Take it it'll be safe to drive until It's sorted? K

If the temp gauge went to the top before the engine gets warm this is a sensor fault.but its better to fix it before driving.

this happened to me last week, on my way to work, while i was late... lol :/ i just disconnected the battery like you do hasnt come back since but has done it before in the past, think its my temp sensor, going to fix mine in new year when i can do it without my hands falling off lol

Okay well did a little diagnostics check and an no error codes are logged, which I suppose is good... and after running for about 5 mins the temperature level dropped to what it should be and the 'STOP' stopped flashing.

Looking in Haynes there appears to be two sensors that it could possibly be..

The 'Engine Management System Coolant Temperature Sensor' - which is fitted to the coolant outlet housing on the left hand end of the cyclinder head with a green connector

or

The 'Coolant Temperature Gauge Sensor' - which is on the left hand end of the cylinder head, with a blue connector.

Any idea which one it could be?!

Help!

I think first one's controlling the cooling fan operation.second one moves the pointer.

Does the radiator fan come on?

Yes when the temperature is high the radiator fan comes on.
