I have a 2004 GTi 180.

Every say 1/10 times I attempt to start my car, all electrics die. Everything, no horn, hazards, lights nothing!

It's as-if there is no battery at all. Maybe just a loose wire or something. Or maybe the battery is dying (it is a Bosch Silver batter, about 1 year old, so should be still fine. It seems strong to me)

To get it going again, I give the battery and fuse box a hit and shake and after about 10 seconds the electrics start up again, and the car starts as normal.

Maybe a loose earth? Where are main earth points on my car?

Anyone else had the same problem?

Main earth is on top of the gearbox & then it loops over to the bodyshell.

Check the battery terminals are clean & tight.

Check the earth lead is ok where it connects to gearbox & body.

Check the main + feed in the BM34 fusebox under the bonnet is clean & tight.

Don't suppose you can find a picture of where the main earth is?

Its under the battery box & then on the inner wing, follow the earth cable from the battery connection & you will find what your looking for Wink

One on top of the gearbox & then looped of on to the body shell.

I hope this fixes my problem! Otherwise its going to be a real headache finding the fault!

It does sound a lot like a loose connection somewhere.

Also check the main + connection in the BM34 fusebox under the bonnet, I have heard of the securing nut coming loose.

A Bosch battery ( made by Varta ), I doubt it would be faulty.

Anyway it's under warranty if it was Laughing

Next time I'm at Halfords I'll pester them into checking my battery, as I'm sure they do free checks..

Check all those connections first.

It sounds like a dirty or loose connection.
