i just plugged them in my car that came with frosted lights. all works fine but when i put full beam on the dipped light goes out is that ment happen or is it ment stay on?

If yours is multiplexed you need a bsi tweak, if its preplex you need a relay or adapted stalk.

Would it not just need an extra earth?

Radio stalk on the steering wheel, if yours is deffinatally multiplex its a bsi tweak that's needed

Even if the car has got both plugs
Hes got the plug for crystals and the plug for frosted?

Or you could use the light switch from a GTi. They have a differently wired stalk, so will work without any updates etc. PM Lee or Mr.BSI about it.

Only works on pre plex, multiplexed like the op is a complete comm2000 unit controlled by the BSi

You need the h4-h7 wiring harness or get the settings changed (if the option is available on your car)
