I've finally got enough cash to either buy a new car or get my pug up to scratch with a few mods, but its a dilemma thats playing on my mind!
My 206 is pretty well maintained - I've had it for about 3 years now - just done the brakes and recently got new tyres on, plus a few bits and pieces from the MOT.
If I keep it I'll be getting the service up to date with cambelt etc, all fluds, fuel filter etc etc etc as it coming up to 60k.
Its a bit scabby in places... there's a ding in the drivers wing that could pop out (some knob hit the car while parked at a shopping centre and drove off before I got back.
I've been looking at the 206 GTI 180 or a Megane 225, and have viewed a few. But, I'm just 'worried' that its buying into the unknown when I have a perfectly good 206 on the driveway - I've bought perfectly good cars in the past that have turned into shitters within a few months.
Is the 1.6 16v an engine that will (eventually) respond nicely to a few choice mods?
I don't want to be flogging a dead donkey if I'm not going to gain anything!
I know this is a very generic/open ended sort of thread lol... I was just wondering what others would do in a similar situation!

Why? Most GTi's are now sheds.
I'd keep the 1.6. Better the devil you know. 
If you have that much money, go put it into a high interest account for some extra spends.

I'd have thought you could buy a mint 180 for a lot cheaper than you could a decent 225.
I've had both & given the choice again, I'd go for the 225 every time.

Don't waste your money on upgrading your car mechanically - it simply isn't worth it IMO.
Buy a new car if you want performance - either to replace your 206 (180, Meg 225, Scooby, etc) or as a weekend/track car (ie: old BMW 328i, etc)

First question, how old are you ??  this may seem silly but if your going to get a new car it might be worth waiting until you can get something ridiculous like an evo 8 or a scooby etc. But if your well into your twenties and fancy a change then the worlds your oyster. Im 19 and iv upgraded from a 1.2 corsa to a gti 180 and I do love the car but at the end of the day I see it as the only car worth upgrading to at my age for the money I wanted to spend, in all seriousness i want to keep the 180 untill I'm well into my twenties so I can get an evo 8 because it's a car iv wanted since I was like 12 :-), if you can afford to get a car you've always wanted and can insure it then get it and don't look back and you won't regret it !!

Thing is your looking at 2 different cars the 180 is nasp, the Renault is turbo!
Get your self an insurance quote first, I've had all sorts of cars and tbh my 180
Is one of the best when I come run to getting another car I'll be keepin the 180
I will be looking at an evo 8 in a couple of years when my points come off!
Test drive them both n when u choose one get the aa or rac check it over it
Might save u a fortune (it did when my mate brought his rs focus mk2) there's
Plenty of dogs about

am 25.. 6year ncb etc etc... can get insured on anything within reason tbh. I think a 225 was about £200 a year more than the 206 I have now which isn't bad... 206 GTi 180 a bit cheaper.
I have around 4k+ to spend (plus selling or trading in the current 206)... stuck though!  :lol:
Everything I see either seems to be too high mileage, is due to have a cambelt change or just has no service history etc etc!

Why do you need to p**s away £4k on another car when the current one is fine?
Stick the money in a savings account & save up for something a lot better for when the time comes the 206 does need replacing.

Actually there was a reason at 1st, I was going to get a van/estate to fit my DH bike in the back, but I really don't want a van/estate...
So then I started thinking, then dreaming, then considering, then wanting, then test driving, then having second thoughts about a proper hot hatch
I may even keep the current 206 for the Mrs if I can afford it!

For 4k you would get a mint 180! Don't think u would a 225 tbh an I don't think they are worth it really

Saving up for a car is fine but it never stops unless you have a specific car in mind. You end up saying "oh but for another grand I could have a...." I know I've been there. At 25 insurance isn't an issue, get finance on something you really want rather than putting your savings into something that's old.
As for sticking with what you've got.....yawn, I bet those guys are a right laugh, money is for spending on stuff you need then stuff you want, so long as it stays in that order all is well.
Although saying all that I've said....I just got rid of my Audi and bought my old corolla back to save money! I'm clearly getting old and grumpy.
