Hi guys, new here, ive just registered.

Last week I got rid of my ford focus to by another Peugeot, had one before my focus and regretted getting rid of it ever since, so this Peugeot 206 GTI came up, very cheap, only 61K miles, he wanted 450 for it, I knocked him down to 400, checked everything over that ive been done over on used cars before, but missed one thing, its overheating, damn it.

Now, it doesn't overheat when im driving normally, doesn't overheat when its sat on my drive ticking over, doesn't overheat on the motorway, it only overheats when im sat in traffic, and boy does it go up fast once it passes fan on stage.

Changed the radiator, changed the thermostat, and changed the header tank cap and its still the same, so I thought maybe it was the water pump, so I spoke to a mechanic tonight who told me how to test if the water pump is working, take the thin pipe off the header tank, the return pipe, and watch for water coming out, as you rev the car up, the water comes out harder, so I guess that rules out the water pump.

Next I thought maybe it was the head gasket, but people have ruled that out as im not loosing any water or oil, not burning any off, never topped it up yet, and they're not mixing with each other either, obviously im trying to get this sorted before it is the head gasket.

So another test earlier just popped in my head, I decided to warm the car up until the fan kicked in, now this is my question, im convinced the fan is blowing air the wrong way (tested with a piece of paper against the back of the radiator) basically, the fan is at the front with the air con rad behind it, then the radiator and then the engine, now the fan is pulling hot air from the engine, pulling it through the radiators and then pushing it out of the front of the car.

To me this makes no sense what-so-ever, I build water cooling systems for computers, and thats the same as my blowing hot air into the front of the computer and letting the fans push it through the radiator and into the computer to try and cool it down.

If I was doing 70mph down the motorway and the fan came on, the wind resistance from outside from doing 70mph would be fighting with the fan trying to push hot air out at the same time ?

this would probably also explain why its overheating quickly whilst stuck in traffic, the engine is getting hotter, and the fan is just taking that hot air from the engine and pulling it through the radiator, probably heating the water up even more instead of cooling it down. ?

Does this make sense ? and does anyone know how to reverse the fan ? I think someone has been messing with the wiring at some point of the cars life and the last owner probably thought it was the head gasket or something like that so decided to sell it cheap, quick.

Is the fan running at 2 speeds? Low speed should come on when the air con is on. It should also come on if you disconnect the coolant sensor plug temporarily.

But yes somebody could have been messing with the wiring.

Which direction does the fan spin? Should be clockwise.

Hi, thanks for your reply, The AC doesnt work at the moment, not sure if it just needs a re-gas or if its the pump at fault, only had the car a week and the overheating is my priority fix at the moment.

Where do I find the coolant sensor ?

Ahh its going anti clockwise, how can I reverse it to turn the other way, is it a simple connector that I can just turn around ?

I'm guessing it's wired the wrong way around. Check the plug I can't remember if it's reversible.

As soon as it stops raining out there, im going to get down there and have a look, I have noticed at the bottom of the fan there is a 10mm bolt which holds a fan resistor in place and there's also a cover to the left of the fan, not removed it yet, but I managed to pull it back very slightly and could just about see what looks like a green relay in there.

Not reversible in normal condition, the plug is keyed to stop it being connected the wrong way round.

Looks like someone has been fiddling either with the wiring OR the plug.

Any chance if a picture of the fan connector plug?

Yes, i'll take some pictures this morning, going down to have a look at it soon and see if I can see whats been messed about with in there.

Well looks like I finally found the problem, just need a little advice on how to remove the bottom grill off the car ? I can see its just clips, but once you push it back off those clips, how do you get it out ?

Looks like at some point the car has had a small front end bump, the resistor is pretty much screwed up and squashed, thankfully I brought a new one whilst I was trying to get to the bottom of this problem, still need to fit it, but need to remove the bottom grill first.

As for the fan, it looks like they have changed it at some point, but couldn't be bothered to change the loom at the same time, there's no plug present, the wires have cut and twisted together and then covered in insulating tape, I guess they have got the wires crossed, just need to get that bottom grill out so I can undo all the screws/bolts, remove the fan and make it better with some soldering or bullet connectors etc.

The bumper needs to come off to get the bottom grille of the car

It's not that bad to be honest mate. The bumpers on these are easy to take off Smile

Apart from the corner bolts that will be rusted tight Laughing

Ive replaced these with stainless steel fixings on both my 206's
