Been watching the forum for a while searching for problems and most times find a solution but not this time.
Back in March I had a strange problem on my 206 hdmi from cold I switch on the ignition the temp gauge shot into the red the engine management light came on and the stop light came on I immediately switched it off I went under the bonnet and could smell an electrical burning smell so I moved a few wires about and got back in and the problem disappeared no more trouble until today when it happened again with the same electrical smell under the bonnet. I let it reset itself gave it a few minutes then turned the ignition and again the temp gauge shot to red the engine management came on and the stop light came on. So disconnected the positive side of the battery and left it for 10 minutes switched on ignition it started the problem had gone does anyone know what it might be.

Hi Tooly, a bit difficult to diagnose from afar. Anyway here are my thoughts. It looks like the initial culprit may be the water temp sender circuit and telling the engine management system to shut down due to severe overheating.
If the water temp sender circuit is a normal type one then this varies with the resistance at the actual sender in the engine block as the water temp rises/cools. I suspect therefore a short to earth somewhere on the wire from the temp sender unit to the gauge. To help the diagnosis you could try just to disconnect the wire from the sender unit (tape it off); if the fault goes completely it shows perhaps a dead short at times in the sender unit. If the fault persists, it points to a short somewhere in the wiring from sender unit to water temp gauge. I would suggest then jury wiring the sender unit to gauge; meaning disconnect the original wire from the back of the gauge and also at the sender unit, then wire in (any old way really for now) a new wire from gauge to sender unit. That will at least eliminate a good portion of the circuit for you.
Good luck

May not be that simple. Later 206s have canbus wiring which means it's 'shared' between different circuits and the car's bsi unit decides.

Very rare now for the wire on the gauge to go to the sensor ...

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.
