#1: Automatic front lights? - RESOLVED Author: rudebwoi93, Location: London PostPosted: Mon Jul 19, 2010 1:30 pm
    ----
Hi guys, not really a problem as such, just dont really understand a mechanism here.

My sister has been driving the car and noting that the headlights come on 'automatically,' there is the word 'auto' printed next to the 'o' step on the light stalk.

- She doesn't really know when they come on, she just noticed that they were on when she hadn't turned them on.

Can anyone here explain this feature? - Like how its controlled etc. how to override it maybe? - Just everything really, cheers in advance!!

Turn the key 1 click, hold in the button on the end of the stalk where auto is printed and you'll hear a bong and the auto lights deactivate. Other way to re-activate.

Uses a light sensor to turn on and off. Simple as that... and to override, move it out of Auto and onto sidelights or low beam depending on what you require...

I *think* the above is correct.

Ah, cheers for that mate, do you know how it works though? - Like when it comes on, is it on some kind of a clock or something? - Light sensor? Etc.???? - Because its not even dark yet and they were on!

It will be a light sensor. I know our other car was very "sensitive"...

On the out side of the windscreen under the mirror area there is a small rectangle, that is the light sensor. They come on when its dark or twilight and also when the sun is very bright.

Ah ok, confusion came in with the fact that sister came home like 20 mins ago, and its STILL not dark now, but i guess its not as 'black and white' as i think it is!

if you look where your rear view mirror is on the windscreen you will see a small square that looks diffrent to the rest of the screen that is the sensors for the automatic lights and wipers.

it doesnt have to be dark its just when the car thinks that there is a lack of light it turns the headlights on for ya and then turns them off automatically when the car thinks there is enough light not to need them

Is there 2 separate sensors? As wipers working but lights are not in auto but work fine in manual

If the lights are in auto they come on when its raining if the wipers are in auto. When you are switching to or from auto with the ignition key in the first position hold the auto button in for around 3 seconds till you here a bong. They are pretty cool as they come on in tunnels and you won't ever get pulled for not turning on your lights lol...

Hello
The headlights are controlled automatically via a Pre-set light sensor (You cannot adjust it). If you turn on the ignition if it is below the Pre-set it turns them on to Dipped Head Lights. Whilst driving if the light falls below the Pre-set it turns on Dipped head lights The only thing you can do is turn them down to side/running lights. The pain is that if you go under a bridge that will turn them on. You cannot turn them off until you turn off the ignition.

Auto lights will turn off if I gets light again.

Going under a bridge shouldn't trigger the auto headlights.

The sensor is adjustable with Planet as they are meant to be calibrated to the screen.

Mine was replaced under warranty as the sensor went faulty & the safety default is illuminate the headlights.

Mine is a 2003 1.4 Automatic, I bought it used just over a year ago and it has always switched them on whenever I go under that little bridge, On the way home is no probably as just around the corner, On the way out is as it turns them on at the start of city driving so drains the battery. Because you can only turn down to side lights until you turn the ignition off, Can it only be adjusted or can it be turned off with Planet and sorry for my ignorance but what is "Planet"
