Over fueling?

I think my car has developed a drink problem!

I haven't had a problem for three years with it but earlier this week it could't hold idle before stalling. Then it wouldn't start for ten minutes at rush hour in the tunnels on the Birmingham ring road... not ideal if you know it! It then started and was fine other than drinking about an 1/8 of a tank over a mile or so.

Today... it wouldn't start at all! Starter was turning fine, if not faster than usual but not catching at all.

Had someone come out and he got it started... it was flooded and when it started ran really rich, and then flooded itself again and stalled. Ran diagnostics and there were no current errors and none stored.

It's now running fine, drives fine but it's inevitably gonna show its ugly face again when I most need it. Has anyone any starting points to address... I finish uni in 3 weeks so I will have to sort it over christmas!

could be coolant temp. sensor at fault

Mine has the same intermittent problem. Can be driving normal one minute then the car suddenly seems to be firing on 3 cylinders and only cures it if I turn the engine off then back on.. Using twice as much fuel at the min too.. I've been told it could be the lamber senser...

come on guys some one must have the answer? i should be driving a 4x4 with the amount of petrol i am getting through. HELP.............................

If its running too rich, could be the EGO (lambda) sensor, although I would have thought running a diagnostic would flag this if it was. If it is this, replacing the sensor that is only a quick fix. Usually caused by a myriad of issues. Have had a problem with the engine flooding itself in an old car.

Have you recently had the car serviced? Something could have been caused by that.

no not yet but i only get 80 miles to 20 pound 1.4 t reg. there is no fuel leaks any ideas this is strssing me out now

id say check the engine coolant temp sensor and this affects fueling

150 minimum I'd say. But depends how you drive in all fairness.

Does the resistance of the coolent sensor change as the engine warms up?

Test it with a multimeter.

Is the lambda sensor plugged in?

yes and yes just bought new sensor temp that is and still the same. any more ideas? even changed all of the throtle body and purge valve

You really need to look at the live data while the engine is running.

Whats the exhaust emissions like?
