Whereas a lot of the 180 members have the 'get it because it costs more and must be much better' attitude.
I think i've looked at both sides throughout this.

Yes I bought my car because i liked the 206 so got the best example off the top of the range I could afford, the 180. It may have cost more but I could afford it so that wasn't an issue. If I was worried about cost I'd have got a diesel. Most top of the range stuff you pay a premium for, & all you guys keep banging on about is cost & that the 180's performance differential, looks, handling etc isn't sufficient enough to justify the extra money over the 138.
So out of curiosity would a 138 owner be kind enough to tell me by how much my £2000 26k 03 180 is over priced compared to a 138?
#123: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: lofty, Location: Near ManchesterPosted: Sat Dec 04, 2010 6:35 pm ---- Well its quite possibly twice the cost of a 51 reg gti for a start...

A 51 plate is at least 18 months older than my car, but for sake of argument let's say that £1000 was for an 03 138 with 26k on the clock in at least good condition with full FSH same as my 180. I'm more than happy the wheels, tyres, interior, uprated brakes & suspension & at least 20% more power is well worth the £1000 extra over a stock 138. I doubt you could spec a 138 up to match, let alone better, the overall package of a 180 for that grand & it would still be a 138 & you'd never get all your money back. Seems to blow away the argument that a 180 is overpriced for what you get. And even if you could bring it up to spec for nothing, I'd still rather have the real thing.

You really need to stop comparing the price of older GTi's with the price of newer 180's. It's a completely unfair way to look at the price difference. The fact is you can get a well looked after 180 for circa £3,000 now, and a 138 of the same age, same condition wouldn't be too much, if any, less.
That 04 GTi was the cheapest well looked after example on the same plate as the 180. I could've picked cheaper 180's as well, but chose a better looked after one with FSH, lower miles etc.
Can you please admit that the price difference is very little nowadays?

#128: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: Iain, Location: Aberdeen, ScotlandPosted: Sat Dec 04, 2010 8:09 pm ---- They always do that, gives them room to make the customer think they're getting a discount when they were always expecting to sell it for £3k

It just sounds like you got very lucky finding a nice example for that money. Or the person selling didnt realise what they had.
Id go for a 180 all the way. Dont see too many around on the roads either and to the untrained eye they look just like "another plain old 206"...
#131: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: lofty, Location: Near ManchesterPosted: Sun Dec 05, 2010 3:29 am ---- I still say there is a big price difference. Gti's were in production much longer than the 180 and so why not compare an average ages 138 to an average aged 180?
#132: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: Lee., Location: Blackwood, South WalesPosted: Sun Dec 05, 2010 3:53 am ---- Because, funnily enough, an older car will be cheaper than a newer car. Amazing that isn't it?!
#133: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: |SGP|, Location: Truro/Falmouth, CornwallPosted: Sun Dec 05, 2010 3:59 am ---- Like a 04 138 would be more than a 01 138.. So does that mean the 01 is better?
#134: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: Lee., Location: Blackwood, South WalesPosted: Sun Dec 05, 2010 4:00 am ---- Apparently so........
