On paper the differences aren't huge but do you do 0-60s everyday of the week? I love mine because of the way it drives/handles/steers and brakes. GRP 17 insurance may cause you issues though. Get that checked 1st too before anything else. May put an abrupt end to your dilemma

It will do as the GTI 180 isnt group 17 any more
Times have changed it's now group 34 out of 50
Normal GTI is group 28

Not every insurance company uses the 50-group scheme.
Direct Line (for example) have their own grouping system

Personally i prefer to manage it like a normal condom and a ribbed condom
One will see you through the job, but the other one adds a little bit more to the fun
Compared to the plain in which you will need to try harder to get the same effect

Tuning a 138 to 200bhp won't change the fact that the gears and steering aren't as good as on the 180. You'll need upgraded suspension, brakes, and probably seats too. Then there's the ESP to consider.
The gearing on the 180 is taller overall therefore isn't as good...there's nothing wrong with the steering on the 138...the 180 steering is hardly full of feel.
if going for 200bhp+ you'd be changing the suspension to something far better than the 180 setup while 180 brakes on the 138 are perfectly adequate. Nothing wrong with the 138 GTi seats and ESP isn't needed on such cars as it takes the skill away from driving them hard...
i agree with everything there apart from the seats, 90% have old cracked leather its not a good look, 180s are better handling but tbh my old gti on coils was better then a standard 180, engine and interior are worth the extra cost tho if you dont plan on some extra power and you can afford to

The 180 is the better car as it should be, after all it came out 4 years after the 138. It wasn't 4 years better though. It's still a 206 and has the same compromises. Remember, the 180 never got rave reviews...poor driving position, uncommunicative steering, clunky gearchange, soft brake pedal etc...it's got them all.
As I always say if you want a standard car buy the 180 but it's not worth paying a premium over a 138 if you want to modify it as you'll be removing most of the extras that make the 180.
I wonder if the 180 would have been called the 170 if rumours Clio 182 hadn't been heard about...

read these kinda threads before and it always seems to be people with gti 138's that say the 180 isnt better noone with a 180 ever says dont bother get a normal gti that should tell you something
i knoooooow that the 180 isnt that much faster iv heard it a million times before its getting boring now but tbh i tested both before i bought mine and knew if i didnt get the 180 id always wish i had.
its not just about the power they are more comfortable have a few more extras looks are a bit more agressive and feel a lot more sure footed true there isnt a great deal of difference between the two but if you can find a reasonably priced 180 and the insurance isnt a problem do it
iv had mine for 3 and a half years now done 45k in it and loved every second of it and have no intentions what so ever to sell up any time soon
comfortable they are not, much harder ride the seats look nicer but there no more comfy, i would have a 180 over a 138 its not a contest tbh but when insurance comes into it its a different story, all that aside 180 ftw
#42: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: E5GDM, Location: EssexPosted: Thu Dec 02, 2010 1:38 pm ---- So much jealousy & animosity from 138 owners, the 180 is at least 25% more powerful, better spec'd, & better handling. 138 owners would probably have voted for Russia over England too.
#43: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: t110jim, Location: invernessPosted: Thu Dec 02, 2010 2:25 pm ---- This tread is turning into a mines bigger than yours thread. I have had 2 gti 138s and a 180 second 138 was much better than first but maybe not as fast however 180 was by far the best overall. fuel consumption about 3 mpg different, better handling it was scary how fast you could go round corners and brakes were much better but you have to learn how to get the best out of it good luck with you decision.
#44: Re: GTI 138 VS GTI 180 Author: no_offences, Location: LeedsPosted: Thu Dec 02, 2010 3:04 pm ---- end of the day the 180 is better but the gti aint far off at all the handling is the main difference but a good set of coils can sort that, its reason i got a gt not worth the extra insurance as its not fast enought to warrant the extra cost, but 180s are better Last edited by no_offences on Thu Dec 02, 2010 4:02 pm; edited 1 time in total
