#1: Uprating reversing lights advice please? Author: Werdnal, Location: Cornwall, UK PostPosted: Fri Dec 03, 2010 4:06 pm

The reversing lights on my SW are crap. I have to drop my son at Scouts in a cramped unlit carpark every week, and can hardly see to turn 'round. I also live down a very narrow country lane, and if I meet any of the local eldery female drivers who won't/can't reverse, then its up to me to back up a quarter of a mile to the nearest gateway to let them through. Coupled with the tinted rear screen, I can hardly see anything!

Anyone please advise what bulbs I could use to improve things?

Hmm, I suppose you could get SMDs, but i'm not sure if it would output more than a standard bulb.

You could try something like this - cgi.ebay.co.uk/MTEC-38...408wt_1139

Or change the fog light to a reverse light and the right reverse light to a fog light.

At what? My HID post or Lee's ignorance about HID's for reversing lights?

Ignorance?

A) Reverse lights wouldn't be on long enough for them to heat up and be bright enough
B) They don't make HID P21W conversion kits

Its not just the car park. Reversing in general in the dark is a pain in the @rse. Just wondered if there was an easy upgrate.

Thanks for replies though Smile

Just use the door mirrors? I've never had a problem with mine to be honest.

Yes ignorance, as they are available, wether they'd be the answer to the problem is another matter, but-
A) How do you know how long the OP would have his reverse lights on for? Or how long he'd be prepared to wait for them to warm up?
B) How do you know the OP wouldn't add a HID as an auxiliary reverse light or be able to convert his existing light?

The old Leyland mini rally car used to have front facing auxillary lights inside the windscreen.... why not use one to face out of the rear window.... simple wiring into existing loom at rear... they are fairly common on freebay

Still useless. Hubby was driving earlier and we had to back up in the lane and he ended up opening his door and leaning out. He drives a van all day so used to using his mirrors, but first time he'd backed mine up in the dark. Going to check tomorrow that they actually have the right bulbs in them, as they seem so dim. They are also very high - being an SW, and don't really cast the light where you need it.

The extra spotlight on the reverse circuit sounds like a good idea, might look into this.

OP is a female by the way, and although we are not known for our reversing skills even in daylight, I can drive backwards as well as I drive forwards!

Shocked No I didn't!!
I said HIDS were available for reversing lights & that he may add an auxiliary light or convert an existing light. I also said it may not be the answer.

Put an auxiliary light, of some description, on the back bumper. Either wire it in to the existing reverse light circuitry or via an independent switch. Both ways would require a relay to be safe.
