#1: Loud engine knocking/rattle Author: Dan206, Location: SwindonPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 6:40 pm ---- Can anybody help? I have quite a loud rattley knocking noise coming from the engine of my 1.4 hdi, its mainly when its idleing it sounds like something is knocking together. Gets really annoying and is quite embarrasing. Its ok pulling away and when driving however you can hear it again when slowing down. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks

#6: Re: Loud engine knocking/rattle Author: chris001, Location: BournemouthPosted: Tue Dec 21, 2010 3:50 pm ---- I have exactly the same problem on a 2000 1.6 petrol glx. Is there a how to guide on this anywhere (couldn't find one on here) or is this rediculously easy?
Also is it safe to drive or am I going to ruin the engine?
#7: Re: Loud engine knocking/rattle Author: mjsroofing, Location: south walesPosted: Tue Dec 21, 2010 4:00 pm ---- would this also cause the engine to shudder when pulling off in first.
#8: Re: Loud engine knocking/rattle Author: panason1c, Location: SomersetPosted: Tue Dec 21, 2010 4:02 pm ---- Defo the crank pulley, had to renew mine recently, £55 off ebay, fitting is a very easy diy.
would this also cause the engine to shudder when pulling off in first.
No, the pulley rattles when its u/s but it doesnt affect engine performance in any way.

ok thanks mate, i dont know why it does it, it only shudders as you pull of as though you havnt got enough revs but it dont matter how much revs you give it, never mind i'll sort it after xmas now.

No, as on HDI's the bottom pulley can debond and rattle
Compared to TU engines which have a static pulley, yours has another problem unfortuantly

It's a fairly common occurance for the cat to break up and cause a rattle as it is quite a fragile/brittle construction and easily damage if the exhaust receives a sharp knock.............could well be the problem in your case.
