#1: My handbrake is not releashing / stuck Author: jg213, Location: Tottenham, London PostPosted: Wed Jan 05, 2011 6:33 am

Hi, for the last week I've been having a problem with my 206 (1.4, glx, 1999.)

When I releash the handbrake, the handbrake light turns off, but when I try to drive the car the handbrake is still on. The car wont go forward, but it is able to go back easier than going forward.

Ive tried putting the handbrake on and off and rocking the car side to side. Thr first time it locked up was when I was in a shopping centre car park and I had to drive it out of traffics way, the drivers side rear wheel was locked as I drove it out the way. Wasnt unleashing so went to the shops, came back and it worked. Got home, the same thing happened again.

any tips or advice on what the problem could be will br very much appreciated. Depending on what you think it is can you tell me how much it would be to get done at the garage? or if its simple enough to do it myself.

edit: Note: A month or two ago I got my brakepads & discs replaced, I cant remember if they were the fronts or backs? is there away I can check? and could this have anything to do with the problem?

i reckon this is just to do with the ice we've been having.

my old megane i had froze the handbrake cable when it was -7 there's was nothing i could do but leave it to thaw

my 206 has done the same thing before but that was only on the drums so rocking it back and forth hard snapped the shoes from being stuck

i'd say just leave it eb for now as when the warmer weather comes back i bet it wont show its face Razz

You will have drums on the back, The lining may have come unstuck from the shoes, Id get them checked out ASAP as you will know about it if something jams while your driving Wink

Could be the cams that opperate the brakes have rusted due to the weather and if the car's been standing over xmas/new year. Most tyre/brake places like ATS etc will sort it for not many pennies.

Thanks for the replys guys. Is it worth me trying to have a look at any of the above mentioned possible problems myself? or am I better off just going to the garage? is there any guides or pictures of what Im looking for etc

if youopen up the drum you might be able to see the problem, it shouldnt be hard to do but can run into problems such as the bearings sticking the drum on, take the wheel off, tap out the notch on the nut with a punch/screwdriver and hammer and use a 32mm socket (think its 32?) to crack it off, take the outside of the drum off, you might need a puller for this
once you have it open you might be able to see the problem, unless of course its the handbrake cable being frozen!

that sounds about right to me but if i've gone wrong anywhere someone please do correct me Wink

Sometimes the drums can be a right t**t to get off, and on a 99 car I suspect they will be. You can get a set of shoes for about £15ish.

Id take it to a local garage, not a main dealer, you shouldnt be looking at much wedge to sort it Wink

Wish id have got a garage to change mine in the end, as they were a reet pain in the )o(

^^^ As above but instead of the puller, put the wheel back on and use it to rock the drum outwards and itll come off easier then Wink
