Hi,

We are getting a lousy 32mpg from my wifes V reg 1.4 petrol. She's no racer, and I am wondering what can be done.

So far I've gapped & changed the plugs, added some "injector cleaner", adjusted the tappets (they were a little noisy) and recently pumped the tyres up a bit more (still awaiting the mpg figures from that change).

Any ideas would be most welcome, oh and thank you for reading my 1st post ! Smile

Change them to 1.1 injectors, and live with it

They drink like a b***h, its just the way TU engines are Sad

Fuel economy goes down in the winter, your radio, lights, heater blowers and air con (if you have it) all take a chunk out of your fuel ecomony, not to mention the cold air is denser so that will lower your mpg too

Denser air is better for an engine though, they perform better, so surely it will go up?

As the thinner the air the more the engine will need to work

What sort of driving do you do mainly, i find around town mine is only around 32-36mpg but as soon as i do some miles it soon goes up to 42mpg. Then of course on the motorway i can normally expect 45-50mpg.

You said you changed the plugs but when was it last fully serviced oil and filter's etc?

Denser air means more fuel Wink

Shush Laughing

Im just thinking of theories, as less air means the engine has to work harder, meaning it needs to draw in twice as much air to match the performance of the winter?

Btw shell fuel saver fuel is crap Wink

I use V-Power because I reckon the 99 RON fuel has to be better for the engine's life span than regular

Denser air is more power because there is a bigger explosion per full cycle in the cylinder, but because the air is thicker more fuel is injected to keep the same air to fuel ratio

To the OP, that isn't really bad, as Addaz said all the TUs are like that, you'll notice it might slightly go up in the summer

hehe Razz the car performs normal in warm air which gives good mpg because it doesnt need as much fuel as when in cold air where its more dense it will need more fuel
Ive noticed mine has dropped from 30mpg to 27mpg over the winter Sad

Shell V-Power FTW anyway Razz

Well Change all the filter,Fuel, oil, and Air filters, the most important one is Air,because it's the one letting the air go to the engine,so if it's clogged, then it will consume more fuel,it's like when your breath.engine breath too,so don't shock it..lol

My 1.4 is ridiculously thirsty! Doesn't hep though I only do 10 miles a day driving so it barely gets warm and it's got to work/got home Sad

Surely it's not "normal" is it ??? It's my wife's car, my Y reg Avensis 1.8 vvti estate does better @ 35mpg despite the density of the air ! We both do mainly local runs.

Oh, I should have also said... I did an oil / filter change & changed the air filter too, this 206 has done just over 70kmiles.

There's nothing wrong with it, that's what a TU3 powered 206 will do average mpg driven around town Wink
