#1: Seb: VX220 Project Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:04 pm ---- Well, I can finally be bothered to write something up. Considering the last one was lost with the site, had no enthusiasm to write another up
Well, bought the car in August 2009, looking a little like this:
206 Hiding in the background
Took it to Kemble Airfield for a quick blat:
Replaced the standard plastic ended radiator with a pro alloy one:
Took the V off it while doing the rad change (still not sure if I like it)
Forged conrods:
Really bad picture of an Eaton M62 Supercharger sat on the floor:
Some other kits I had in (bought 7 in total from the USA and passed them onto VX guys here):
Packed up in the snow:
Got some new wheels on order as I needed new tyres and felt wrong not to get new wheels when it would only cost me about £200 more (£100 if I count in the sale of my old wheels).
TD Pro Race 1.2s designed by Thorney Motorsport and Rimstock to perfectly suit the VX. Comes in 7Jx16" fronts and 8Jx17" rears. Saves about 3kg per wheel on weight too.
Have a full Milltek exhaust on its way too. Downpipe, precat, sports cat and backbox included. Have some Eibach track springs too, stiffer but without the need to have pillows on your seats when you drive around the countryside roads or hit a pothole.
Now just have a couple parts for the charge cooling system and the odd part to get things in motion and start taking bits apart in about a month or two when I get back from France.
New Wheels!
Clean laminova cores and manifold:
S/C all sanded down and keyed ready to be sprayed now.
Washers and o-rings are from laminovas.
100A alternator there too as the 120A one is too large to fit on alongside the charger and larger inlet.
Charger is now cleaned and sorted, along with my rocker which a friend did for me. In two minds about the whole colour thing though, but will see how we go, calipers should be red soon so maybe it will work.
I've painted the calipers to go with it. Kind of like them.
Lettering looks a little odd from this angle, and it was hard to do, but still looks alright.
Here's how everything stands in my end room
Lights came out (as they are getting black coated lens surrounds as it looks a little meaner and gives me something to do) and most of the front clam bolts were out too
Then took to removing everything inside, that included mats, centre consoles, side pockets, carbon sills and rear shelf, and of course seats.
Exposing the bolts to remove the rear clam:
New coilovers ready to go on, 425 front spring rate 475 rear
Undertray is very dirty as it's not had a clean for about 3 months, and when I fit my diffuser I'll give it a good clean. Wheel arches will be cleaned out when I set the ride height later in the week, when the springs have settled.
Yes, most things are dirty and I do need to give them a clean, but unfortunately that's not the prio right now!
Made a bit of progress on the interior. Fitted most of the floor carpet section. It just adds a little warmth to the car and makes it more welcoming for a daily drive. Side bits are still loose for now as I've not got time to do the rest.
Took the front clam, bonnet and rad surround off to drain all the coolant down.
Got my standard lights which look like this (silver lens surround):
Popped them open, masked them off and sprayed them similar to the VX/T lights (black lens surround), and resealed again. Gave me something to do when it got dark.
Did little jobs like mask off the black mesh on the bootlid, front clam mouth and the bonnet vents and showed them some black hammerite so they are nice and shiny again, no pics of them finished though.
Started on the real work now, enlisted the help of 2 local friends as there was way too much work for 1 man over the 2 days I have this weekend.
Rear clam had to come off.
To expose the engine and exhaust, including chassis.
Now you see why they are called big kids go karts, under that body work there is very little to them with the ridiculously short wheelbase and hardly any weight outside it at all, can just about see the rear clam on the lawn in the background:
Bits started coming off, inlet manifold, exhaust etc.
In the meantime work was having to be done at the front, chargecooler and twin fan fitment:
Chargecooler header tank in the engine bay:
Fitted with the normal engine rad and surround back in place, chargecooler pipes leading into the sill to the rear:
Rocker off:
Head off:
Pistons:
At this point the sump had to be removed and drained of oil, to get at the crank to remove the conrods so the pistons could slide out. No pics of the inbetween as I had my hands full.
Pistons out:
You can tell the difference between the new larger forged rods and the old cast thin ones.
See straight through the bores to the floor:
At this point I noticed that not only did the cams look brand new, the bores didn't have a single score mark on it and Neil (who has built about 10 of these engines to different specs) said it looked almost new and not even run in. Previous owners have kept/serviced it very well.
Pistons and rods back in, gave the pistons a very brief scrape (so we could see the directional arrows they have imprinted on the crown - wouldn't want to put them back in the wrong way!!), though you can be fairly rough with the surface of a piston as it does see some fairly large explosions and high temperatures.. just don't touch the bores!
Multi layer head gasket on, shorty after, the head went back on
Was just comparing the new S/C (left) to the old N/A (right) throttle bodies to see the difference, fair amount in it!
For now the rocker and breather could only be placed on, as my water pump was fubar'd so Neil is bringing me another tomorrow (and hence we couldn't fit the timing chain), along with a spare exhaust manifold as mine had a little crack in it.
Packing up for the day.
So the girlfriend came round, had a look over the rear chassi, decided didn't look nice enough and proceeded to sand, brush, and paint it for me because I was knackered:
First job was to pop on another exhaust manifold as mine had a slight crack in it due to them fitting a small 'precat' after the manifold which causes it to warp shortly after cold starts.
Timing chain on and rocker on properly:
Inlet on:
Alternator and custom made idler for the charger belt:
Wiring to be sorted:
Sorted!Injectors & fuel rail on. Tried to keep as much of the 'factory' look as possible:
Into the block:
Chargecooler pipework:
Charger on:
Filling up the coolant systems and attaching the throttle body:
Milltek and heat shield on:
Bleeding the systems:
All of us three working hard:
Most things back together:
Rear clam back on:
Lights in:
As you can see the ride is stupidly low at the moment and it's hacking me off! I really need to sort it out but I hardly have the time to at the moment!
The leak is thankfully gone now (I hope) and as such will be ready to go as soon as I can raise the car a bit and soften the dampers a few clicks, I've done them 10 front and 16 rear which is mental, going to take them to about 7 front 14 rear I think.
Rolling roaded on 04/05/10 at 256bhp and 223 lb/ft of torque at 6580 rpm.
Had my windscreen replaced with a black surrounded one minus the previous dents.
Dirty, as usual, but brakes are nearly bed in and tie rod is holding well.

Also forgot to say, note the wing in the 6th picture on the black VX'R' used as a beer shelf
#4: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Alan_206HDi, Location: Hatfield Heath, HertsPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:31 pm ---- Not a massive fan of the car, but it looks nice. Similar type car to the Lotus Elise?
#5: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Bailey, Location: Finding Dr. RobotnikPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:33 pm ---- Same car as the elise just different shell. It's not as popular just because it's got a vauxhall badge but it's an elise in disguise
#6: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:34 pm ---- Yeah, same chassis as the Elise S2, except more reliable/quicker engine model to model, less insurance, and easier to stick superchargers on
#7: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Bailey, Location: Finding Dr. RobotnikPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:38 pm ---- What spec you got under the bonnet? You done much to it? What insurance group is vx220
#8: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:41 pm ---- It's the standard model, 2.2L with a 0-60 of about 5.6ish.
It's a high insurance group, but won't cost you as much as a Civic Type R or even something like a Clio 182 Cup (Or at least it didn't for me, I got higher quote for both of those cars than what I'm paying for my VX!)
#9: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Bailey, Location: Finding Dr. RobotnikPosted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 8:05 pm ---- Nice that's rapid! I would love to own that car. The one with the black alloys looks mint as

Cheers mate, picking the wheels up on monday I think and the charger is probably going to be mid april, mainly because my friend isn't around to help me until then!!

Heh, that's a slightly special one, it was originally a standard turbo, it's now got the Astra VXR engine in it, and insane internals and boost at around 30 PSI I think. Running about 305bhp and does 0-100 mile in like 8.4 seconds.

Nah it's not matey, not been round there for about a year now. I think I might know who you're seeing though. Black wheels as well? Or standard ones?
#17: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: MEGA, Location: Harrow, LondonPosted: Wed Feb 24, 2010 3:48 am ---- Seb is from Northampton. Incest capital of the world. Well, except for Norfolk.

Standard I think, fairly loud sporty sounding exhaust. In the Boscombe area.

Slight special?! 100 miles in 8.4 seconds! Like a rocket!
But seriously, what a beast. Have you aspirations to get to those standards with your VX? What performance/cost are you looking at for all the things your planning on doing to it?
Sorry for the intrusiveness, but your thread appeals to me! I want to know more!

A normal stage 2.5 supercharged VX hits around 260bhp with a 0-60 of around 3.8 seconds from experience.
Supercharging to that level isn't cheap, but it's not overly expensive either.
Around £1k for the S/C, manifold, gaskets, throttle body.
£1400 for a full exhaust system (though I got a 4000mile one from a friend for £700)
Around £1500 more for odds and ends from then on.
In all, on a tight budget it can be done for about £2k if you are patient and look around.
It'll probably have cost me in the region of £3.5k in the end including the new wheels.

However that guy's wasn't lowered. Mine has some Eibach track springs hanging around somewhere that will fill in the gap above the front wheels.

Awesome! I understand what you mean about tracking it. For me, cars are all about acceleration. Its not about driving over the speed limit along roads, its about the pick up! Love it! Only reason I liked my Dads elise was for that reason... and for the noise (Janspeed dual exhaust system) and the fact it felt like you were driving a very fast rear wheel drive go kart!
#61: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Mar 09, 2010 8:43 am ---- At the moment mine has only a little of both, it's nippy, but more so in bends, gets taken out by the quicker cars on the straights, and the noise from a standard exhaust is a little sporty obviously, but nowhere near a proper one.

You wish
Sam - anything with a 0-60 of less than about 5.8 seconds tends to top me on acceleration.
It's when I get to higher speeds though that things start taking over.
50mph + will see most cars (especially turbos) with a 0-60 of around 6.5 seconds, which in theory are slower than me, start to gain on me and pass me at about 70ish
Mainly because although it's a 2.2 and is VERY strong and has a lot of potential, it's hugely detuned. They reduced the port sizes and such, which make N/A tuning very cost ineffective on this engine.
With the S/C it will be able to keep pace with most supercars, hopefully anyway. Will just see how my engine reacts to it.
#66: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Quarmbo, Location: Bristol & LeicesterPosted: Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:36 am ---- Thanks for the explanation Seb. Can't physically wait until you've got it done! Might have to pay my Mum a visit at work and drive to yours! Get some pics of all the work being carried out etc etc if you can. Isn't it you and a mate doing it, or are you taking it to a garage?

I'm doing it with one of the lads from the VX club. He's got a throttle bodied VX, and now wishes he'd gone S/C from the start... N/A tuning on these cars just doesn't give you the rewards you hope for.

#72: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Mar 09, 2010 7:43 pm ---- Clean laminova cores and manifold:
Will sort the s/c unit when I can be bothered
#73: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: jimmyfloydreturns, Location: SittingbournePosted: Wed Mar 10, 2010 2:33 am ---- You need to explain what each part does when you take the pic!
#74: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Mar 10, 2010 5:25 am ---- Oops!
Well basically this is a laminova core:
My inlet has 4 of them. They slot down the 4 holes in the manifold, and then the cap goes on top. Basically the manifold sits between the supercharger and the engine. The compressed air coming from the S/C is obviously warmer than the ambient air temperature due to the compressing itself.
The air is forced to pass over one of the four laminova cores, which are basically rods with radiation fins around the edges to transfer the heat from the air into the coolant.
In other words, that's how a charge cooler works
And that's why they need to be super clean!
#75: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: jimmyfloydreturns, Location: SittingbournePosted: Wed Mar 10, 2010 7:57 am ---- Gotcha
#76: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 6:45 am ---- Supercharger is all sanded down now ready to be painted properly.
Dropped off my manifold coolant cap to a friend to get it dual passed (basically more effective cooling through the laminovas).
He also took me out in his S/C'd VX, which is currently on a base map (250ish - instead of 310 which his spec is built for), and there was a guy on a Yamaha (no idea what the hell model it was) who was struggling to keep behind us up to about 65.
#77: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 6:13 pm ----
S/C all sanded down and keyed ready to be sprayed now.
Washers and o-rings are from laminovas.
100A alternator there too as the 120A one is too large to fit on alongside the charger and larger inlet.
#78: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:27 pm ---- S/C is painted black now, but not sure whether I like it or not, will have to see in the daylight.
Awaiting my chargecooler from Forge Motorsport now, they've made us up a couple of custom ones (along with my custom header tank), for the CC system.
#79: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: tRiCk, Location: MitchamPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:47 pm ---- Are you gunna fit this your self??
#80: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:47 pm ---- Yes mate
#81: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: tRiCk, Location: MitchamPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:49 pm ---- Get in. Team built by my self. how long before its finished do you think?
#82: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:49 pm ---- 4 - 5 weeks I would say
#83: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Mar 16, 2010 10:41 am ---- After nearly spending £1200 on Nitron Track (NTR) suspension, I quickly decided that was stupid, and went for the Nitron Street (NSS), for about £600. Spring rates I've asked for are 400 front 500 rear. Should provide me with sufficiently less body roll though!
#84: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Mar 16, 2010 7:24 pm ---- Charger is now cleaned and sorted, along with my rocker which a friend did for me. In two minds about the whole colour thing though, but will see how we go, calipers should be red soon so maybe it will work.
#85: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Mar 19, 2010 7:25 pm ---- I've painted the calipers to go with it. Kind of like them.
Lettering looks a little odd from this angle, and it was hard to do, but still looks alright.
#86: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Iain, Location: Aberdeen, ScotlandPosted: Fri Mar 19, 2010 7:42 pm ---- Looks alright? I think it looks awesome!
#88: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Mattie-RS, Location: A Track near you ;)Posted: Sat Mar 20, 2010 6:36 am ----
Looks amazing so far and will be foooooking rapid
#89: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Mar 20, 2010 6:54 am ---- Cheers mate, it should be yeah!
#90: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: shaker, Location: AustriaPosted: Sat Mar 20, 2010 3:31 pm ---- Should've painted the S/C in either chrome or that shiny red color
Like it anyways mate, looks really good
#91: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Mar 20, 2010 3:42 pm ---- Could have done yeah, chrome would have been OE and I would have been fine with that, but thought maybe too much red would just be a bit OTT.
#92: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 10:13 am ---- I'm itching to get home because my last parts have arrived I think!
Also figured out it will be the 21st supercharged VX worldwide when it's done
#93: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 10:18 am ---- 21st? Pah!
#94: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 10:19 am ---- I'm fine with being 21st, get out you!
#95: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: sillyhilly, Location: The Mean Streets of CoventryPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 12:12 pm ---- This car annoys me on Forza 3 lol
However, looking good Seb
#96: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 1:48 pm ---- Hahah! Why does it annoy you?
#97: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 1:49 pm ---- Charge cooler rad has arrived though, looks neat. It was custom built by Forge Motorsport to a design made up by a friend who has just supercharged. This is the second one to be made, has 50% more capacity than the pro alloy version so should show a significantly higher cooling than the normal ones people use, and is dual pass rather than single
#98: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: sillyhilly, Location: The Mean Streets of CoventryPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 2:01 pm ----

I can't drive the bloody thing... It's very tail happy! lol
#99: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 2:27 pm ---- Yes, it is indeed when you overcook it. No electronic aids as well.
#100: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:59 am ---- Nitrons were too much in the end. Don't want to fork out £1200 for them...
Went for Gaz coilovers as some numpty had them up new on eBay for £425 instead of £525 so I grabbed them before they noticed their err.
Called them up and he admitted they were wrong but would get them out to me asap with my requested spring rates of 425 front 475 rear.
Looking forward to putting them on and playing around as there's no p**sing about to adjust them on a VX, just turn the wheel on full lock and put your hand in to adjust
Will definately be altering them for track use.
#101: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 8:52 am ---- Also picked up my dual pass manifold, along with the gift of a cupra R splitter which apprently look good on the VX... will see about that one, and my full Milltek system with downpipe and race cat.
Just been to the dealers and got a Saab turbo MLS head gasket for slightly lower compression and some head bolts to go along with it.
Now just waiting on my shocks and will all be good to go as soon as I'm back from France.
#102: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 6:48 pm ---- So bored sat in a chalet in the alps, nothing to do til the gf gets here tomorrow. So I just felt like posting here as it's my thread instead of spamming something else ^^

#105: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Dave, Location: BirminghamPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 6:51 pm ---- I love how you can spam in your own threads, i do in my one lol!
Car is looking good man, good to see you cracking on with it. You and Jamie both actually!
How are you funding this at Uni if you dont mind me asking
#106: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:02 pm ---- Yeah indeed, you get unlimited spam in your own thread ^^
And no Jamie, I will not go skiing in a blizzard at 1 in the morning!
I'm funding it by working 3 to 4 days a week on reasonable pay for a part time job, and not having to now go back to uni (apart from for exams) until october! No lectures in term 3!
#107: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:02 pm ---- Should have got a Lotus Elise.
#108: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:02 pm ---- You sir, are a f4g.
#109: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:06 pm ---- Touché....touché.
It going to be ready for April then? Stop p**sing about in the Alps, and get your spanners out, it'll only take 5mins to fit.
#110: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:08 pm ---- That's with the compulsory tea break. Also man up, your game is weak. I'd love a blizzard, I'd be out in it right now skiing down the side of the alps with my dong out.
#111: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:13 pm ---- Have you got a D-DAY then? of when it will all be done?
#112: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:13 pm ---- I start work on sunday when I get back.
Going to give it a jack up either side, wheels off and fit my new suspension first. Have to send off the ECU to courtenay sport to get mapped. Along with taking both front and rear clams off (if I have the right tools for the rear one, which I don't think I do as you have to take the seats out). Then on the following saturday is when a mate is doing timing chain and forged rods at the back, with me working on the charge cooler at the front, once all that is done it's then just onto the S/C fitment really and plumbing everything in.
In, at the most, 4 weeks time, at the least a week and a bit, it should be mapped for the s/c, have the charger fitted and the actuator set right, have a full milltek downpipe/precat/race cat/backbox fitted, have a shiny new design forge chargecooler on, and new Gaz adjustable coilovers (SO easy to bring up/down on a vx, dont even need to jack it) and hopefully will be whining away down the back roads.
I'll probably pop up a post each evening showing what work is going on if I can! Last edited by Seb on Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:14 pm; edited 1 time in total

#114: Re: Seb's VX Thread Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:21 pm ---- Well I have with me my minicams so if I do go hooligan one day I'll take one with me and strap it to my sunglasses.
