Just checked girlfriends car oil and topped up with about 1/2 litre. While doing this i noticed a white/yellow gunge on oil cap not much.I also checked dipstick which just has oil on.Is this something to be worried about as i know when water gets into the oil it can cause this gunge. The car has used roughly about 1/2 litre water over a year and done 5000 miles.

Could be something as minor as condensation or major as head gasket failure.

Get it checked out Smile

Sam.

How much use does the car get?

If its only do short trips around town then the engine wont be getting up to a decent temp to burn the condensation of.

If it does short runs it's fairly normal. Just make sure you take it for a decent long run once in a while.

That's the problem solved then Wink

It needs to go on a nice long / high speed run to get the engine temp up to burn the condensation of from inside the engine.

normal for this time of year mate, if there's none on the stick, and its not steaming from the exhaust once its fully warmed up i wouldent worry about it. i was recently at a large garage and asked the dude about this and he showed me the caps off of all of the cars one by one. most of them had a bit of white cream on the filler cap Razz

EDIT: beat me to it MrBSI Razz

we going away next weekend will take her car for the long run.On the point about it losing about 1/2 litre of water over a year is this also normal.Has i drive a company car i dont worry about these things lol. Thanks guys

Check / top up all the levels & pressures before you go away.

Once there leave the car overnight & check the coolant level again & see if its lost any.

I've always found engines find there own coolant level between the max & min marks on the bottle no matter how many times you top it back up to the max one Laughing

how many miles does it have on it? it could have a slow water leak

ive had leaks before where you loose about 1/2 litre over 6 months and cant see any on the ground (evaporates too fast and only leaks when coolants under pressure)

looks for crystal deposits around any joints on water pipes

if it is leaking into cylinders through the gasket you will notice steam out the exhaust even after a long journey. take it for the drive, but before you turn the engine off when you are at your destination look at the exhaust to check for this.

not 100% sure but if you were loosing this into the engine i recon there would be alot more cream/sludge then just a bit on the cap

p.s i agree with this, we have a ka that always settles its coolant level just below the min mark, then sites there indefinitely. if I top it up to the max it looses it untill just below the min again really fast, then sites there forever haha. strange

its got 72000 miles and this is first time ive topped it up for a year.left the engine running while i cleaned it this morning cant see any leaks could be a small leak on radiator? Also not lost any water while doing this.

i really wouldnt worry about it mate. 1/2 over an entire year is not much tbh. i wouldnt call that a problem, just keep your eye on it. as said make sure its topped up before you go and check the levels again when at your destination. also couldnt hurt to have your oil changed if its overdue (not related to water loss in anyway) but i always like to get it changed before a long journy if its needed anyway

Its a 1.1 on a 51 plate which is why she only uses it for short journeys but we have been on holiday in it before saves alot on fuel.

yeh, should look into getting the cam belt changed soon. if it snaps say bye bye to your engine Very Happy

EDIT: having said that its still fine to use untill you get it done

Think book says 80000 miles dont know if it would be worth doing or buying another car.Any idea how much it roughly costs?

Timing belt is dead cheap for that engine Cool

1 hours labour plus the cost of the belt, there that simple to do on a 1.1 Wink

Its every 80K miles OR 5 years whichever comes 1st Wink

A Peugeot main dealer can change a 8 valve TU timing belt on a 206 in under 45 minutes Wink

Lost a bit of coolant and still getting mayo colour under filler cap.Mate did a test where you suck coolant out into a tube filled with blue liquid and if the liquid changed to orange there is a leak on head gasket.Result was the liquid stayed the same colour. Are these tests reliable? Also the car is going to be serviced and have the timing belt and water pump done next week should i wait until i know for sure the head gasket is not leaking.Any advice.?

#24: Re: water in oil Author: MrrNoName, Location: UK PostPosted: Sun Feb 06, 2011 5:04 am

those tests are pretty gd, if there are exhaust gasses in the coolant (signs of HG failure) the liquid will change colour, the fact that it stayed the same is just another sign thats the cars fine Smile

a bit of water loss is not uncomon considering age and mileage.
