#1: Looking at a 206 2.0 HDi 90 Author: adam_16v, Location: KentPosted: Sun Jan 23, 2011 3:51 pm ---- After learning the mpg of a 1.4 is not what i expected i've decided to turn my attention to a diesel 206.
Im going to look at a 2001 206 2.0 HDi 90 LX which is up for £1300.
Having no clue, first off, does this sound reasonable? It has a full service history and has done 120k. The mileage is slightly off putting, but i've never had a diesel before so it could have plently left in it.
Also the mot runs out in 3months are diesel mots any more strict than petrol?
Another option is a 2004 2.0 HDi S with only 80k, part service history and is up for £2000.
Any opinions would be really helpful, plus things to look out for when buying a diesel.

diesel don't do emission test, they only do smoke density test

look for service history etc.
Diesel MOT's the same for the bodywork etc, but different for emissions. the car is not checked for hydrocarbons or CO2, but instead has a smoke test. so you wanna check that smoke isnt comming from the exhaust when its revved.
because its got a turbo check for turbo whine when accelerating, this can be sign of a worn turbo. worn turbo may also give black smoke on heavy acceleration.
other then that its basically the same rules as for when you buy a petrol car. check for rust, damage, bodges etc etc
EDIT: also as said above check for proof the cambelt has been done or you will have to get this done straight away and can be expensive

If the cambelt hasn't been done i'll factor that in with an offer, got a very good specialist nearby so souldnt break the bank. Especially since the cost of a cambelt change on the last car cost around £400.
What price do the turbos go for on these? just in case.

normally £400-600 all included (re-cond)

yup. would suck if you brought it and the turbo went a month later. as said before, check for turbo wine when driving, check for visable signs of oil leaking from the turbo and check for black smoke (can see in the rear view mirror) when accelerating real hard

not on a 206. 406 do have intercooler

Smoke when booting it, and turbo whine are key parts then. Apart from that, the same as a normal.
I'll let you know how it goes, although im still tempted to go over budget and look at the 80k one.
