#1: 206 problem, High revvs and power loss Author: Tear1977, Location: Cumbria PostPosted: Thu Feb 03, 2011 10:26 am

Hi, I'll start by saying hello as this is my 1st post, I'm Rob from West Cumbria. So Hello everyone.........

I've had a couple of Pugeots in my time my 1st being a new 106 gti which I bought in the year 2000, probs my favorite car of all time (ive had at least) then on the 8th Oct 2009 I bought a W reg (2000) 206 1.4 glx for my missus.

Everything ran fine up until December 2010, I will try and give as much detail as possible as there is that much info on this specific 206 problem Im almost lost.

In December I had just set off from my house to my local petrol station to fill up, the station is only 200 yrds away so the car had zero time to warm up, I sprayed a wee bit of deicer in the lock cap as we were having serious snow at that point and I couldnt open it. After opening and filling up I started the car to find it was revving at nearly 3k rpm I sat for a minute and it seemed to settle so off I set to work, no sooner had I set off the car started accelerating on its own, I drove for about 2 miles and decided there was no way im taking it to work so I went straight to my local garage, he looked under the bonnet fiddled around with a few pipes and it went back to normal. He says he done nothing so maybe had something to do with the cold. Anyhow since then it has continued to Rev high and is now losing power when i accelerate, other times its fine for a few miles. It always seems to happen when the car is up to temp now but has been known to do it occasionally when its cold.

When it is revving high and im at a standstill and I try to accelerate it will judder and stall. After a stall it will take roughly about 1.5 minutes to start again alongside a strong smell of fuel, it will just spin the starter motor but no fuel seems to be coming thru. When I get it going again it seems to be fine but other times I cant accelerate, it will judder up the road.

After reading threads on here and other net searches I decided to change the coil pack, which hasnt fixed it. Probs made it worse than ever. I read about the dodgy Sagem ECUs but mine has a Megelli (Cant remember spelling) ECU which ive read should not blow with coil pack failure.

I have booked it in to my local garage but from what i've read from alot of other people with same problems is it wont bring up a fault code. Im just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and is there anything I cud try/change myself before I spend even more money on a car? Funds are abit low atm as ive a zafira getting an engine rebuild and ive just got a new turbo for it.

Many Thanks, hope someone can help

Robbie

I had something like this with an old 1.1 I had. I had the coilpack changed, which didn't do anything. The coolant temperature sensor was replaced and that completely sorted the problem out. Its not nice when the car begins to pull itself!!

And IIRC, the temp sensor is a relatively cheap part.

Thx for quick reply, ill grab one of them. Anyone know where is a good place to order one? Just tried cleaning the ICV, unfortunatly the hurricaine winds got the better of the bonnet then my head, lol. So job cancelled.

P.S. Does anyone know where I can locate it on the car? Looks as if I can pick one up for £15 so worth a try before I pay a fortune at a dealer.

I seem to remember on an old car of mine it was located at the top of the radiator but not sure about this one and its abit dark outside.

Thanks

green plug its the 1 on the thermastat that controlls the engine, you can test your looking at the correct 1, by un pluging it, if the temp guage doesnt work you pulled out the wrong 1, as thers 1 that does the gauge and 1 that actually controlls the engine.

Thanks very much for the advice, I replaced the Coolant temperature sensor today and everything seems to be back to normal. Such a small cheap part can cause alot of heart ache.

Thanks again

Rob
