#1: Strange handling issues Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:56 am ---- I have had this problem for a long time now but it is getting worse. Its not very simple.
Symptoms:
Going over a poor road surface the car skips and is upset more than it used to be by bumps especially when accelerating.
At higher speeds (50mph+) The car tends to pull randomly to ether side. Like I have yanked the wheel or been hit by a big gust of wind. This makes motorway driving feel quite unstable. This also happens when cornering. It is coming to the point where I could be cornering at speed and it could potentialy cause me to loose the back end.
Yes it could be a number of things but I have ruled out a numper of them.
Tracking
Tyre pressure
Balancing
Wheel buckling
Also there is no play in the wheels; that rules out things like track rods, trailing arms and wishbone bushes.
That left me with 2 ideas; Drop links and Shockers. The drop links however would make a noise if work like a banging or clunking. It doesn't seem to be the shocks ether becase if you push the car up and down the shocks seem to rebound fine.
I have spoken to a number of mechanics and they don't know ether.
#2: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Seabook, Posted: Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:35 pm ---- have you check the spring?
it might have broken or came off from the cap.
#3: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:48 pm ---- that is a point. Although they look fine and it sits level
#4: Re: Strange handling issues Author: stevedude, Location: aldershotPosted: Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:46 pm ---- could it be rear axle?
ive heard if they go the cars all over the place
#5: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:05 pm ---- that seems fine. The shocker on one side has started squeeking though thought it was the brakes. It feels fine though
#6: Re: Strange handling issues Author: chrisd, Location: Northern IrelandPosted: Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:28 pm ---- Its the wishbone or topmount, trust me had this probably and didnt notice it was a wishbone til i had new/old part side by side
#7: Re: Strange handling issues Author: NorthantsBen, Location: Raunds, NorthamptonshirePosted: Sun Feb 20, 2011 3:07 am ---- Check wheel bearings some point, made my handling naff on mine ,
#8: Re: Strange handling issues Author: SarahW, Location: SunderlandPosted: Sun Feb 20, 2011 12:19 pm ---- I'm having the exact same issue with mine, it seems to be since i got my tracking donw though, took it back and it got done again and it improved slightly, mine is the same it does it at high speeds it pulls to the right suddenly and when i go around a roundabout at normal speed too, it doesnt do it however when i turning right at a junction for instance or turning left, just tends to be roundabouts and high speeds.
#9: Re: Strange handling issues Author: stevedude, Location: aldershotPosted: Sun Feb 20, 2011 12:25 pm ---- ill let ya know tomoz as ive just changed my wishbone
#10: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sun Feb 20, 2011 12:30 pm ---- I have two fairly new wishbones, should be less than 6 months old I think. How can I tell visually when looking at the top mounts.

no you can't tell just by looking at it.
if the topmount bearing fail you will hearing knocking noise when you turn your steering wheel.
#12: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sun Feb 20, 2011 7:07 pm ---- don't have that so its not them
#13: Re: Strange handling issues Author: stevedude, Location: aldershotPosted: Mon Feb 21, 2011 10:04 am ---- well shes alot better ride today, but tracking is out now, gonna do other wishbone on sat, then get tracking re done.
one problem thou, i now get one huge bang when i start car, i think it might be mount, but god knows which one, how can i tell? and where are they?
#14: Re: Strange handling issues Author: lewisbow123, Posted: Sat Sep 15, 2012 8:46 am ---- please help I Have this exact thing you explained it exactly how I have its more when steering left and at higher speeds it's like the steering has a mind of its own .. it started when I put alloys on drove it home and it was fine .. took it to be tracked and this stuff started .. I took it back and told them and they found that one of my alloys was loose .. don't no how but it was .. anyway they said that wad what the problem was .. anyway all the alloys are perfectly fine but it's still doing this and the tracking place hasn't really Done anything to make it better they just keep 're tracking it but it's still just as bad .. I don't no what to do because I can't even describe it and it's dangerous to drive in my opinion it's like I'm fighting the steering !!! I don't have much of a clue what to check my self!
#15: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sat Sep 15, 2012 6:19 pm ---- Probably the wishbone ball joins have play in your case. When you fit wider tyres the wondering in the steering is more noticeable. Had this issue twice before.
#16: Re: Strange handling issues Author: gaffa786, Location: 2 Places at oncePosted: Mon Sep 17, 2012 8:13 pm ---- any update as i think this is hapning to my car also.
how would i chek if the spring is broken or not in place? i tried to move it by hand to see if there was any play (but the car was not jacked up) but nothing moved.
also my car gets moved by passing cars on motorway to bit wierd.
#17: Re: Strange handling issues Author: DeeTurbo, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Sun Oct 21, 2012 10:57 am ---- This is the same problem I'm getting in my girlfriends car.
Has anyone got there's sorted?
The one thing I found that I thought was causing this was the bearing on the off side trailing arm had gone, but on replacing this I still getting the same issue and the replacement of the bearing made no real difference.
Next weekend I'm going to have a good look at all the suspension front and back to see if I can find anything that could be the cause of this issue.
#18: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Seabook, Posted: Sun Oct 21, 2012 11:06 am ---- if there is mark on the stud there is little point to replace the bearing as it will just failed in no time
#19: Re: Strange handling issues Author: DeeTurbo, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Sun Oct 21, 2012 11:53 am ---- Yeah, that's true but I had already bought the bearings.
This is how bad it looked.
#20: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sun Oct 21, 2012 12:34 pm ---- That is rather rusty which suggests water getting past the seals is to blame for the bearing damage.
My axle wasn't perfect on one side but doesn't show any sign of movement. Somewhat shinier than yours.
#21: Re: Strange handling issues Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Sun Oct 21, 2012 12:42 pm ---- I had this pulling to one side randomly
It WAS my front bottom arm bush that had pulled out causing it to float around inside.
Replace both sides and then have the vehilce tracked. Should cure it

Ooh very shiny!
Yeah, The seal was ripped pretty bad. I should of checked and re-greased the other side while I was at it.
I'll do it this weekend when adjusting the rear.

The bushes in the wishbones didn't look to bad but I'll be stripping it all down next weekend to have a proper look and check the top mounts/bearing.
I should be lowering it too, come to think of it I might as well replace the wishbones and top mount bearings while I'm there for piece of mind.
