2.0 Hdi fuel filter
-> 206 Problems

#1: 2.0 Hdi fuel filter Author: adam_16v, Location: Kent PostPosted: Tue Mar 08, 2011 12:18 pm

Seems im full of questions this week after being off ill.

Going to service the hdi this weekend and I keep reading varying advise on changing the diesel filter.

Can somone point me to a guide for the 2.0 hdi? Or offer any advise.

Where is it exactly?

Thanks

behind the radiator, inside a black filter housing

aftermarket filters are usually just the paper element inside whereas dealers will supply with the whole lothousing included, but not worth it.

just be careful when slackening off the housing's lid, they can crack and break if brute force is used Smile

Undo the drain screw to empty the diesel. Unclip the fuel pipes, then take the lid off

how do you get them two main pipes off the housing to get at it ?
just pull them off or turn them or ...??
is there any other parts you need to renew aswell as the filter

iirc correctly there's a sort of release button on the pipe that has to be squeezed. been ages since i had mine though. watch out for a bit of fuel p**sing out those pipes

just the filter needs renewing, its a simple enough procedure

ok thanks , may sound stupid but how do you stop fuel from p**sing outta pipes or dont matter that much,
Do you need some sorta pliers or things to block pipes for a min or just let a bit run out ?

i think i just let it run out but try to keep them pointing upwards or something so that it doesnt go p**sing all over the place, its not a constant stream just build up in the pipes, run it off into a jam jar if you want.

if you want to block the pipes stick some kitchen roll in there, i recommend this so that no dust or anything gets into the pipe as well..

One more question soz for the million questions,
but how often does this need doing aswell

there's a bleed screw/valve on the housing, you unscrew that slightly. then get someone to turn the ignition on but dont start the car, you will hear the fuel pump whiring, while it does this watch the valve you will see bubbles of diesel where the air is being pushed out, do this a few times (5 or so) and then do the bleed screw back up Smile

all air is now gone from the fuel pipes.

and i did it every service just becuase they are cheap as chips, diesel is horrible dirty stuff and my car had done over 120k

but i cant remember the recommended interval

To change the fuel filter
Remove the drain screw so that all the diesel from the filter is emptied [fit a new drain screw for the filter renewal]
Unclip the two pipes on the top, making sure you plug them with something like tissue to stop dirt entering the system
Unscrew the top of the fuel filter and remove the filter
Refitting is the reversal of removal

The fuel system does need to be bled when the fuel filter is changed.
You need to open the bleed screw a little
Turn the ignition on for about 5 seconds, then turn it off [repeat this process 3 or 4 times until diesel starts running out of the bleed screw]
Tighten up the bleed screw
Fuel system should now be primed

EDIT: Make sure you know which filter you have. It's is Bosch or Mahle. THEY AREN'T INTERCHANGEABLE
