Also make sure you draw a pic of how it goes back on. really easy tbh
tensioner is basically a pulley on a spring Last edited by -RAJ- on Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:51 am; edited 1 time in total

put a socket & ratchet or spanner on the bolt on the tensioner, when you twist the ratchet it will move the tensioner one way and it will loosen the belt, while holing on to ratchet remove belt.
then do same to put new belt back on ..

#7: Re: quick guide to gti aux belt Author: giveitsomebar, Location: redditchPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 10:01 am ---- yeah squeeling noise and the belts started shreading on the farside

#9: Re: quick guide to gti aux belt Author: giveitsomebar, Location: redditchPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2011 6:18 am ---- i did this yesterday and started taking pictures but i got that p**sed off i give up taking pictures..
when replacing the belt make sure you go to a respectable car parts place as it was a 2 mile walk / run from my house and the first time i got there i give him my reg he give me a belt which was half the size of the other one! ( i hadnt taken the other one off by this stage ) he said nope thats right thats a 206 gti with air con so off i run got home took the other one off quite easily. i took the pulley off to the side of the tensioner as the tensioner isnt really visible straight away its just tucked up behind the chassis but is accsessable but i didnt care to much just wanted it off without cutting it! so i run back with the old belt and he measured it up with another and give me another one off i went again i got it home and had the tensioner at full compression and it still wouldnt go on! by this stage i was well p**sed off got the tape measure out and the belt he give me was 15mm to short! so after the 3rd visit i got the right belt (1740mm for a gti 138 with aircon) and it went on quite easily without having to put the tensioner under full compression
so good luck to who ever has to still do this, it is fairly simple just make sure you get the right size belt before you start!

#11: Re: quick guide to gti aux belt Author: -RAJ-, Location: COVPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:30 am ---- did this fully solve your squeeling noise, by just replacing the belt?
#12: Re: quick guide to gti aux belt Author: giveitsomebar, Location: redditchPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2011 8:00 pm ---- it did for me as the belt had jumped a groove and was rubbing against the engine
if you turn the lights on and it squeels more or on full lock it will be the belt loose if it always does it no matter what and doesnt change pitch then one of the pulley bearings has probably gone but you cant check them till the belts off anyway..
#13: Re: quick guide to gti aux belt Author: nellyhaggis, Location: SheffieldPosted: Mon Mar 21, 2011 7:47 am ---- On mine I aint sure if it is the belt as it sounds like the tensioner, is there any way of telling for sure?
Has anyone taken this off?
If so how easy was it? As I did one on a rover once and ended up cutting a bore hole in the chasis to get to it.
