#1: Cambelt, Timing Belt, Timing Chain- Are they the same thing? Author: kirban, Location: London PostPosted: Mon Mar 14, 2011 12:59 pm

Hi All,

Cambelt, Timing Belt, Timing Chain- Are they the same thing? AND what does it cost (roughly) to get one changed.

I am at 61,800 Miles and I believe that mine has not been changed.

What is the belt on the outside of the engine that I can see?? Is this the belt or is it "inside" the engine?

Any help would be greatly appreicated.

P.S - 206CC 1.6 s 16v , 2003 Petrol

Cheers

K

Cambelt and timing belt are the same thing, timing chain does the same job but is a chain, not a rubber compound like the other 2

Belt you can see is probably the auxiliary belt which runs the alternator, AC etc, the timing belt is under a cover, probably on the left hand side of the engine if you are looking at it from the front

Been asking around to get mine changed and everyone seems to be saying between £300 and £400

Also, get the water pump done at the same time

So I suppose the next question is.. where? That does sound like a good price. Kwik Fit quoted me £360 just to do it with no service.

Yeah sure hes in Wokingham you know it ? {nearish Reading and Bracknell } ,
Mechanic Mark Halsall he is Peugeot specialist 07775807527 .

Too be honest might be bit to far if you in London up 2 u though, hes good honest and real cheap too actaully works at peugeot main dealer but got own garage at does any car for cheap.

Hes the only mechanic i know that wont do anything that doesnt need doing ,

like says thats ok wont need doing yet , unlike most just do it and add on loads more money for it sometimes, without even letting you know till the end.

I did and I regret it... Unfortunately I am from Australia (well that parts not unfortunate Smile ) and so I didn't know ANY mechanics here as this was my first car. Back in OZ I knew loads but I really had no choice.....

Anyway you live and learn.

Kwik Fit are just ridiculous. Why on earth they like to take on chavs who work whilst wearing hoodies with the hood over the head even is beyond me.

A timing chain in a well maintained engine will generally last the life of the engine and does not have a schedule for replacement, compared to a timing belt (same as 'cambelt') which will need regular mileage/time related replacement during the life of the engine.
