#1: Squeeky Brakes - When NOT In Use! Author: Ste, Location: Hull -or- The World Of Info Code PostPosted: Mon Mar 21, 2011 11:46 am

Righty boys and girls I has me a wee problemo!

Recently when I've been in slow traffic (Under 10mph) my brakes squeek when I'm not using them, it was bugging me for ages as to where the noise was coming from but I've diag. it to the brakes by heal and toe'in, the second I apply pressure onto the brakes the noise stops..

It's extreemly intermittent and isnt effecting the brakeing ability of the car what so ever, or giving any other adverse effects other than absolutly DOING MY HEADIN! (CAPS LOCKS FTW RELEASE THE FURY)

brakes are fairy new (3 months old at the most) and were OEM parts professionally fitted.

What could the problem be? They feel perfectly normal when in use, but they just have an annoying squeek when not in use..

I've had a peek through the wheel and one of the little pin things (holding pins or whatever, strange shaped metal bits on the edge of the brakes) looks slightly wonky on each brake - I cant see how that could effect it but I just thought I'd mention it..

Any thoughts guys? Just about to go jack the car up and have a tinker so looking for ideas of what you's think it could be.

Remember this is when the brakes ARE NOT been used - It's not the usual brake squeel when in use (I dont have that atall)

Thanks in advance all,
Ste.

ermmm because its a peugeot? Smile

squeaks are generally a sign of two things rubbing together are they not? id say check for anything catching or rubbing, this would explain why it doesnt do it when its pressed as the calipers are in a different position. just an idea

My response was your first one too, but it's got past the point of just annoying me now and starting to make me want to kill it lol..

Yeah it sounds exactly like the break squeel you get when you have squeeky breaks, but when I'm not using them it's stoopid..

Going to check to see if anythings stuck inbetween the pad and the disc but I doubt there will be as there's no damage marks / groves in the disc (Thankfully) lol

Cheers for the reply Thumb Up

Oh and on a sidenote, I dont think this is brake binding as the car isnt pulling or feeling like the brakes are on (Plus I'd definatly notice it with a 1.1 lmfao)

And obviously it's not the low brake shoe chirp that some shoes get when they're low as there too new for that..

sounds like the brake pad is gently resting on the disc when the brakes are not on. not enough to cause massive heat, or slow the car, but enough to make a sqeak when driving.

does it go off when you apply the brakes? check the distance between the pads and disc

There's a gap between the disc and pad checked earlier, but I noticed a slight tiny tiny raised area of the disc on the front side (couldnt be felt or seen until I spun the wheel around and abit of brake dust sat on it) but no dip on the back and when rotating the wheel it made a scraping noise, which once warmed up I'm guessing would turn into a squeek so I'm guessing it's that..

Yeah it vanishes when I break (Made me think it was the limit squeek on the brakes lol was wondering why they'd gone so quick but it's not)

It passed it's MOT ect 2 months ago and it's causing no problems other than irritating me so I'll just save a wee bit of money and get some new uprated discs and pads for it and hopefully that'll cure the problem..

Have you tried taking the pads out and giving them and the caliper a good clean with a dremel tool or something similar, I had the same problem before(1.1 also :P). Once I had done this they stopped but they are beginning to do this again now.
Basically I think it is just a build up of brake pad dust somewhere which is making contact somewhere on the disk causing the noise.
I could be wrong but that is what caused my brake noise Razz
