#1: Tyre Wear Author: mdstone, Location: South WalesPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:14 am ---- I have a question, is it normal for an O/S/F tyre to wear quicker than the N/S/F or is there an underlying problem?
Wheel allignment has been checked 2 mths ago. The tread on this tyre seems to have gone down rapidly in the last few weeks from about 3mm to 1.6mm. N/S/F is still about 3mm
Tyres are Goodyear Eagle F1 205/45/16. Handling has got really bad recently too. I know I need new tyres but this wear seems odd and I don't want the same to happen to a new set. The only other thing I've had done recently is a new coil spring on the N/S/F Last edited by mdstone on Tue Mar 29, 2011 2:26 am; edited 1 time in total

#3: Re: Trye Wear Author: mdstone, Location: South WalesPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:26 am ---- Really, I thought it would be the other way round?
#4: Re: Trye Wear Author: DJ-, Location: UKPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:31 am ---- Indeed the N/S left wheel would take more load when going around roundabouts.
Even so, the wear shouldnt be this much imo. Its not like you go round them at stupid speeds!
#5: Re: Trye Wear Author: mattievrs, Location: LeicesterPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:34 am ---- sounds like an underlying problem with the bushes/suspension components on the front. Its definately not normal.
#6: Re: Trye Wear Author: Barking, Location: sarcasm-in-shedloadsPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:42 am ---- how much do you weigh?
but yeah, excessive tyre wear could mean that there could be a problem with your suspension - assuming your tyre is correctly inflated
#7: Re: Trye Wear Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 4:08 am ---- Is it even wear right across the tread pattern, or more to an edge? If you put the palm of your hand over the tread and move it inside to out and back again. Does it feel like it is rougher ore one way than the other? If you move slowly down the road and let go of the steering wheel, does it pull one way or stay steering straight?
As Barking says check tyre pressures, if they are correct then likely to be the suspension.
Swap your front for your rears so that even tread wear is on the same axle and then have the alignment rechecked (if possible using laser alignment) It is possible that one spring is stronger than the other since you had one replaced. Have you measured the ride height. Centre of wheel to edge of wheel arch is easiest, compare both sides.

haha i had that problem with my old pug, if i drive through an s-bend at speed my rear end skids a little and then suddenly regains grip sending me up on two! nearly hit wall first time i did it. slowed down a little now

haha it was because the shocks had settled... LOTS! and the car was jus like a boat. twas fun tho... ish
#12: Re: Trye Wear Author: mdstone, Location: South WalesPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 6:19 am ---- It is 38Psi on the front, tyre wear is even so its not over-inflation or wheel allignment but the car does pull to the left more than the right if you let go of the wheel. Allignment was correct 2 mths ago.
when you say about swapping the font and back do you have to swap the alloys over? I'm sure they have to be facing the right way or something?
The front coil springs have been replaced 6mths apart so both are now new(ish).
#13: Re: Trye Wear Author: mdstone, Location: South WalesPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 11:28 am ---- I just had a good look at my tyre and it is in fact worn on the inner side - the thread is actually coming through, gonna have to get them replaced ASAP. Would that be allignment to cuase it? I'm a bit puzzled as it passed MOT only a few weeks ago (and had allignment 2 mths ago) and this wear has done some considerable damage in that time.

If your wheels and tyres don't have rotation diriction arrows on then they can go on any corner, failing that just do O/S/F to O/S/R and N/S/F to N/S/R that way rotation stays the same.
Definately sound like your tracking could be out. I've known cars have the tracking done and then be out a couple of days later. Potholes and speed humps don't help. To set the tracking properly, you should have even tyre wear on both wheels. The laser alignment rigs offer a more accurate service, but cost a bit more but will not only check the tracking but the camber too. If they do the job properly, then the steering wheel should stay in alignment. Some lazy mechanics will just adjust 1 track rod which causes the steering wheel to be off centre and can cause the vehicle to pull.
#15: Re: Trye Wear Author: mdstone, Location: South WalesPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 11:47 am ---- Cheers, Macca, sounds like the allignement may be out then. Am I right in saying that only the front wheels can be adjusted?
