2003 SW Gearbox

Im hoping someone might be able to put me straight???

I bought a 2003 206SW in october 2010
1.4,29600 on clock, Full service history
bought it from a main dealer so thought no problem
Came with 6 months AA warrenty

Any way started to get a few issues after a month or so detailed below:

Exhaust rattle/squeek, flexi pipe changed by dealer FOC sorted
Squeeky alternater belt/pull, changed by dealer FOC sorted
Paint flacking off boot lid, repainted FOC by dealer sorted

Then the problem really started:

Found it really difficult to get 1st and 2nd gear
went back to dealer they said clutch was nearly worn out by
then done about 1500 miles so changed FOC.
It was ok for a couple of days then same problem went back to dealer
they changed the clutch cable and checked gearbox oil again FOC
and gave us 2 new tyres and a good will gesture off good will.

Told that there is NOTHING wrong with the car.

Car still very notchy in 1st and 2nd by now getting a bit cheesed off the car has been in the dealers for a total off 3 weeks on and off
got second opinion from another main dealer have been told
1st and 2nd syncro needs changing £800 all in.

Tryed AA warrenty, went to there approved repairer and told its normal
for this car/gearbox.

Is this true?????

Hopefully someone might be able to put this issue to bed for
me once and for all.

Is it good or bad???

Syncro's at that low mileage shouldnt be worn, normally, worn syncro's will cause a 'crunch' noise as you engage the gear, sounds more of a problem with the gearchange linkage rods adjustment to me. (unless the gear is crunching in which case it will be the syncro u/s)

Thanks for the reply.

There is no crutching in any gear just seems very stiff when going
to and from 1st and 2nd.

Is the linkage a big/expensive job????

Thinking about taking out another waranty on the car
just been quoted £99 for the year from GO car warrentys

Has anybody heard or used them?? Some customer
feedback would be nice.

They will cover the car for the same faults as the AA but the AA is £250+
per year.

also while im hear what about the cam belt?
When is the recommended interval to get it changed?

As you can see the car has done no miles but age wise its nearly
8 years old and there is no stamp/indication to say it has been done.

Cam belt renewal is 60k miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. Do a google search for a peugeot independant specialist in your area to have a look at the box, etc.

Sounds more like a linkage problem to me though (inexpensive)

Is it still stiff going between 1st and 2nd without the engine running (clutch pressed down)?...............if its a linkage problem it should still feel the same

Im near Birmingham

The gearbox seems fine when the engine is not running.

Going to get it checked out by a Peugeot specalist but not main dealer
Going to get a price for the arms to be replaced under box and Cam belt change.

Do the arms first if is not to expensive then go from there.

I would then want to check for clutch 'drag'..............is the 'biting point' on the clutch pedal very low?............

If the clutch is ok then the problem probably does lie within the gearbox

It had a brand new genuine clutch at peugeot 1500 miles ago.

The car dosnt go anywhere, I ride a bike to work and the Mrs has a company van.

Its does about 30 miles a week if that depending if we go shopping etc.

i had worn syncro's on a box that had done a 114k Miles on my old XS 1.6 just makes it bit firmer to get into gear, p**sed me off so sold it as wasnt gonig to change a box for the 3rd time

check the gearbox box oil,

make sure there is enough and is the correct grade.

wrong grade of oil will seriously affect gear change.

I'm thinking more on the clutch cable side of things, whether the clutch is fully disengaging due to maladjustment of the cable (or air in the hydraulics if its not a cable clutch)
