#1: suspension or backbox?? Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:29 am ---- when there is people sitting in the back and I go over the bumps, the back box hits the bumps. I checked the back box and it does seem lower than it should, or is it? or it could obviously be the suspension or both be a factor.
if I was to get this serviced, I was thinking I might aswell get a new back box... any idea how much labour approx will cost on this ? to replace the back box with this:
if i need new suspension, will this cost a fortune ?

Author: ukskater01, Location: sutton surrey/welwyn garden cityPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:32 am ---- Your back box is way too low, could just be that it's come away from it's mounting points or that the rubbers have perished, replace the rubbers If needed and re-mount properly
#3: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: Antknee, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:32 am ---- It looks lower than it should do, have you checked all the mounts?
#4: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:45 am ---- If it was suspension then it would still sit correctly in the bumber cutout. Looks like the mounting rubbers may be worn and stretched. Simple and cheap fix if they are.
There is a possibility that the metal mountings are bent, but only way to tell is to stick your head under and look at the exhaust mounting point.
#5: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: Kersh, Location: Bridgnorth, Nr WolverhamptonPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:03 am ---- why does that hit? ive seen much lower..
sure your backbox isnt hitting the underside of the car?
#6: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:22 am ---- i havent got out to check to see what it was but if you say you've seen lower which doesn't collide with bumpers then it must the suspension?
#7: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: bellevuespares, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:37 am ---- Do as people suggest and check your rubber mounts. your problem as nothing to do with suspension with the description and photo you have supplied
#8: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:39 am ---- I do not much about cars, don't know what rubber mounts are. I can take pictures under the car if this helps?
#9: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: bellevuespares, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:46 am ---- Look underneath a tthe rear, You will rubber mounts, Brackets that hold your exhaust in place! If these look to be stretched and perished rather than solid, then they need changing.
#10: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: bellevuespares, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:46 am ---- Where you located?
#11: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: bellevuespares, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:50 am ---- As you mentioned replacing the rear box, I would suggest NOT buying tht one you shown, Im guessing you are a young driver? Keep it standard for best performance and reliability.
#12: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 7:00 am ---- why don't you recommend? what are recommended ones?
#13: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: Antknee, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 7:05 am ---- My god thats rusty lol how old is the car? looks as though the rubber mount is broke, even if thats not the cause it would be worth replacing it, the rubber thing at the top of the photo between the underside of teh car and the exhaust
#14: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 8:06 am ---- quite old 1999. I'm going to get new backbox anyway just want to know why the one I chosen was not recommended?

Have you ever stood at the side of the road waiting for the big beefy car you heard 20 minutes ago to go past, only to find it is a Corsa crawling along, being driven by a baseball capped, spotty teenager, led almost horizontal, with foot to the floor in second gear just to make all the noise?
If you had a performance engine, then i'd say go for it.
At the end of the day it's your money so buy whatever you want. It's not my cup of tea.
#16: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: kingdom200, Location: Leamington SpaPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 10:48 am ---- i think the real question is.....how big are the people in the back lol??
i know lower cars with lower exhaust that dont scrape..... saying that take everyones advise as the exhaust looks a lot lower than the norm
#17: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 10:56 am ---- it is either one fat ass or two normal weighted people.
I can confirm when no one is in the car, the pipe is 22cm away from the ground.

no you got me wrong I'm not looking for performance just my feelings I want to get a new one because my current one is all rusty and falling apart.
#19: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: AX-Rated, Location: Swansea, WalesPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 11:07 am ---- Sounds as if the middle section is hitting the torsion bar when your tackling bumps.
Although exhaust manufacturer put an upward bend to go around the torsion bar/rear axle part, a lowered exhaust would do this.

I wasn't saying you will get any performance from it, just loads of noise.
TBH you would find it cheaper buying a standard backbox and fitting it yourself (only 1 clamp) and if you still want to make it look different, buy a stainless exhaust tip.
#21: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: Jamie1337, Location: Dorchester, DorsetPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 3:18 pm ---- Why don't you stop over the top of the bump and make sure nothing's touch it? Tbh I'd expect it's more of something banging/knocking than scraping, which you'd notice differently.
#22: Re: suspension or backbox?? Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Fri Apr 15, 2011 1:22 am ---- From the 2 pictures you have put up, on the first one there doesn't appear to be any scrape marks on your back box. Are the humps that you are hearing the noise on the little blips in the road, or the full width ones?
On the second picture, looking at the condition of the suspension mountings, I would be more drawn to thinking the noise was coming from there. While the car is parked up, rock the car from side to side on the suspension, you may hear the noise.
Also, this might sound daft, but check to make sure your wheel brace is secure in the boot. It is easy for the clips that hold it in place to break, might even be worth checking the spare wheel carrier is tight while you're there.
