#1: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Sun Feb 07, 2010 3:47 pm ---- I had a 2001 1.4 Quiksilver as my first car and quickly got into browsing eGay for various parts and upgrades. Made a few amateur errors such as a gay carbon skinned fibreglass bonnet with gash vent.
However as I got more involved with different forums and started properly getting into the car it started to take shape.
I'd always liked the euro cars and seeing as my little 8 valver wasn't going anywhere fast I decided that I wasn't going to focus on performance and I would just modify it aesthetically... anyway 2 years later and it looked like this;
However I turned 19 and was growing bored of the car, and after having gone on track at FCS09 I knew I wanted to upgrade.
I was looking at RS Clio 172s and Type R's but out of nowhere I was offered a 2004 Aegean Blue GTi180 at little over £3k. It had 2 owners from new, service history, completely standard and 60k miles, and was too good to refuse. So I checked I could afford the insurance, which at 19 wasn't friendly, but worth it!
So a trip to Tamworth secured me this;
However before picking the thing up I was already buying stuff for it! At the start this was small stuff like RC vinyls, and getting the wheels refurbed as well as adding the sp arch extensions and stainless steel mesh grilles;
I also picked up some Keskin KT1s in the hope they may look ball achingly epic;
...but they really didn't suit the look I was going for, and worth far too much just to keep to gather dust in the garage, so they sold to a guy in Ireland at a massive loss seeing as the wheels and tyres cost me well over £1k to put together
Then used the money to purchase some more goodies like a scorpion exhaust and morettes;
At the end of October I sold the Quiksilver which released a wad of cash, that was poured back into the current wip, which I was determined to make more track focused than visually pleasing
The extra money enabled me to take a trip down to Rimstyle to procure some of these bad boys;
With some Toyo T1R tyres. I then focused on the suspension,I had grown tired of the impracticality of wound down coilovers on my last car, so opted for Bilstein B6 dampers with Eibach Sportline springs. For the rear I bought some stupidly expensive Peugeot Sport torsion bars, upgrading from 20mm to 24mm
Quick w**re session with a decent photographer;
Then towards the end of November I decided I would take the plunge and made my way to Adenau!
Definitely the best thing I have done and can't wait to get back out there
When I got back I bought a scangauge to keep an eye on various sensors for me, but disappointed it hasn't got the ability to monitor oil temp! Other than that a great piece of kit;
Anyway here's a few pics of how it stands now;
I have made a few purchases recently that haven't been fitted yet, such as a K&N panel filter, janspeed exhaust, more wheels, GoPro Motorsports Hero HD (via recommendation on here), Alpine IDA X305, and mocal oil filter with stat in sandwich plate;
Unfortunately had a bit of bad luck on the M50 in February and managed to blow out both my passenger side tyres and destroy the wheels, and bizarrely damage my passenger wing mirror. Needless to say I am very confused as to how it happened, as there were no other cars on the road and no barriers/anything else to hit!
Anyway repairs are under way and the car will be back on the road very soon ready for my next planned Nurburgring trip in April!
Also ordered my Jenveys, which arrived and look like this;
Got my brakes through from Kam Racing;
Should all be done ready for FCS!
Got my Morettes on too;
Thanks to Macj I have ordered my cams, Catcams 804!
These have been sent down to Devon already as well as the manifold for Sandy to do some measuring and do some wizardry with them!

You can repay me with a passenger lap, I'll even record it for you if you want, in HD
#10: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:29 am ---- Why not, I'm on for 2 sessions this year I hope. Just gotta get that damn blower on first.
#11: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:31 am ---- I have 2 car cams now, so I can even lend you one for your other lap if you want?
I have booked one session of tracktime, you can bunk in with me if you want too?
#12: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:32 am ---- Yeah man, everything is good
Sounds like a plan! Cheers
#13: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:36 am ---- I'll have a couple of sessions booked as well hopefully. Be great to all be on together
#14: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:37 am ---- It would be yeah, but I have a feeling it'll all be screwed around like it was last year, they don't put people on with the same car club bizarrely. Wish they did.
#15: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:38 am ---- I put "Been on track before" so hopefully you all did too!

Lol, yeah Turini's would have been nice, although they are pricey.
#19: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 11:49 am ---- I haven't ordered the ECU yet, just the bodies/manifold/linkages, but even that was the best part of £1k, so I'm easing into it. Still got cams to get yet
#20: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: =ZiAn=, Location: SloveniaPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:44 pm ---- Very nice project. I like the Nurburgring sticker. Not many people on the road know what it means but those of us who do, envy you a bit
I got a question though. How come you bought a 180 to have it fitted with ITB's? I'm asking this because I don't really know about any 180 with them. Even Longman said its better to take the EW10J4 as the base instead of EW10J4S. Anyway I've still got lots of questions but I'll write you a PM
BTW best of luck with the car
#21: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Cr4zYb0y, Location: SalisburyPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:52 pm ---- Cars coming along very nice mate.!
#22: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:55 pm ---- Yeah but I wanted a GTi180 before I wanted TB's...
Either way, I could sell the bodies if it is too much fuss, there's no shortage of people who want them!
As long as you get management that can cope with VVT it should be fine
#23: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Joe, Location: SwindonPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 3:29 pm ---- when you fitting the morettes?
#24: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 3:30 pm ---- When I can be arsed mate, tbh I'd rather sell them and get the cash for the TB's
#25: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: vintageoriginal, Location: London, UKPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:30 pm ---- how are you planning on fitting that oil cooler jamie? isn't the 180 a canister filter...?
#26: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 6:42 pm ---- Yeah it screws i between the filter and the block
#27: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: =ZiAn=, Location: SloveniaPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:59 pm ---- Jamie, when are you going to install the oil cooler. I'm asking because I was thinking of buying it myself as i like to blast it every here and there and when you're doing 200 for a while, it tends to heat up the oil quite quickly. But a friend had one installed on his 1.6 ITB powered 205 and discovered a little problem in the winter, the car just couldn't heat up (oil temperature never got to 90 degrees on the highway) :S
So if you still have as much snow as you did a month ago, that would be a real test for this problem
#28: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:13 pm ---- Which is why I bought a special thermostat fitted into the sandwich plate that only lets the oil through when the temperature of the oil reaches 80 degrees centigrade!
I can hook you up with the same kit if you want?
#29: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Austin, Location: TelfordPosted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 5:55 am ---- Car looks great jamie, glad your going down the performance root. I want to go to the ring this year, got the car to go aswell now, when are you thinking of going?
#30: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 6:26 am ---- Already booked it all, leaving 28th April
#31: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 8:48 am ---- Just had a very successful conversation with DTA, who will be able to provide me with an ECU that can run fly-by-wire throttle!
#32: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: =ZiAn=, Location: SloveniaPosted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:26 am ---- Nice, one more step to see the first ITB powered GTi180 (this is starting to become a really long name xD ).
#33: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:35 pm ---- Haha it's going to be a very long winded experience!
I'm buying things step by step so I can pretend to myself it isn't costing as much as it really does!
#34: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Dabamash, Location: The car in frontPosted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:46 pm ---- Haha, pedobear. Looks sweet. God I love Aegean Blue, it makes me love mine more and more.
#35: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:58 pm ---- I love it too!
#36: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 5:28 am ---- Some minor bad news... Nobody will sell a DBW capable ECU for anyone building that into a road car, as Motec are being sued by someone who crashed and claimed the throttle stayed open when he didn't want it to!
So back to the drawing board, and will probably be looking at the cable set up again...
#37: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Luke, Location: LeedsPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:44 am ---- Great looking project there. It's going to be one sweet car when you've done.

#38: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:52 am ---- Cheers Luke, really annoyed about this whole ECU business, I was initially very relieved when I thought I wouldn't have to faff about reverting to cable throttle, hopefully by April/May when I buy my ECU things have may changed and I will be able to get one capable of FBW on a road car!
#39: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 8:28 am ---- Just got off the phone to my supplier, my TB's will be here next week
Managed to wangle a cheeky bit of money off too, and I don't need some of the parts from the full kit so wasn't as expensive as I thought. Just need to hear back from Jenvey about my manifold now!
#40: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Mattie-RS, Location: A Track near you ;)Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 8:49 am ---- This is going to awesome mate
If were both finished for FCS hope too see you on the track
#41: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:29 am ---- I won't be done for FCS mate, I'm hoping it will be ready for the 2011 season to be honest, get it all done next winter!
Still got more to buy! Cams, rods, maybe solid lifters if I can afford them...
#42: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Mattie-RS, Location: A Track near you ;)Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:30 am ---- ahh cool,
cart wait to see it finished anyway and maybe one day join you on the track
#43: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:36 am ---- Bit of a dilemma at the moment, I can either opt for the standard air horns that come with the kit, ie already been ordered, aluminum jobbys in the picture below. However for £220 I have the option of getting the carbon ones
Bye bye bank balance...
#44: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: twed207, Location: borders, near carlisle.Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:46 am ---- carbon fibre!!! you know it makes sence! lol
if you've already got carbon under the bonnet then i's say the carbon ones. if not, maybe the aluminium one but give them a really good polish.
#45: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:50 am ---- I might just stump up and kiss my next student loan goodbye.
Only thing is I have loads to pay for...
Nurburgring, Ecu, cams, brakes, probably more wheels...
Can I really justify £220 on CF trumpets?
#46: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: vanman_foci, Location: Barry, South WalesPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 4:15 pm ---- YES! get carbon! you know you want to! and your only going to do this once! DO IT PROPERLY!
#47: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Luke, Location: LeedsPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 4:26 pm ---- I always prefer to see a set of highly polished metal trumpets over carbon ones.
#48: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:24 pm ---- Think it's gonna have to be the CF ones... I won't be happy if I just go for the Alu ones
#49: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Dave, Location: BirminghamPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:35 pm ---- I think the Alu ones look better tbh.
Look shiny, stand out more and are blatanly cooler. Trust me blud! lol
#50: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:52 pm ---- No Dave don't try and change my mind, I want carbon
Gonna try and get the same airbox as Paul too, the ACT Jenvey branded CF jobby
#51: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:54 pm ---- Aluminium > CF
Fact! (No seriously, it's a fact!)
#52: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:54 pm ---- You can't do that without explaining Seb
#53: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:55 pm ---- FS, wrong way round. CF > Aluminium
#54: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 6:57 pm ---- Cheers big ears, you almost made me upset!
#55: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 7:02 pm ---- For performance anyway. Looks... hmm, undecided. I do like polished metal on TB's. I can hardly talk though, not like i'm keeping my stuff silver..
#56: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 7:04 pm ---- What's happening with yours?
I prefer the looks and the extra performance is the definition of an added bonus!
#57: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 7:09 pm ---- Decided that I wanted to do something slightly different so the SC might stay silver... but I think the rocker is going red.
Was going to do the SC black.. but I'm not sure what impact that might have on heat.
#58: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 7:10 pm ---- Haha go for it!
I'm very excited about this whole TB malarky!
#59: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Dave, Location: BirminghamPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 8:07 pm ---- Alu ones look so much better Jamie!
#60: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Dave, Location: BirminghamPosted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 8:07 pm ---- Prove me wrong?

#62: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: =ZiAn=, Location: SloveniaPosted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:04 am ---- I'd keep the alu ones, they're going to be tucked away under the filter box anyway Save money for other a lot more expensive parts :s
#63: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 6:26 am ----

#66: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Dave, Location: BirminghamPosted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 6:44 am ---- Meh, Not worth £220. You could spend that £220 tarting up the rest of your engine bay, and keep the alu ones! Muchos better solution!
#67: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Mattie-RS, Location: A Track near you ;)Posted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 6:44 am ---- that is engine p0rn right there

#72: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: carl123uk, Location: NuneatonPosted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 7:18 am ---- i have no idea which is better performance wise but the aluminum one's look better.
#73: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Wiliam_morgan, Location: South WalesPosted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 7:35 am ---- HURMMM i think there's alot better ways of spending 220 squids, if u have CF all overthe engine bay then do it.. but you dont do you i admit the CF ones look better but only when accompanided by other CF bits. u gt samco hoses thats someink you could spend your money on which would look better im thinkin.
#74: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 8:38 am ---- Cf are definately the best in terms of performance and shape, so long as they're manufactured properly. How much difference is a subject of debate, but the more air you start drawing in, the more you will notice the difference.
#75: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 10:30 am ---- They're made by Jenvey, so I'm guessing there made properly
I've gone for the 45mm bodies which are manufactured to work best with cars above 200bhp

On a side note, i think you should sell the carbon fibre trim in the interior and have it painted Aegean Blue. Apes looked much better than the fake CF Trim!

They're made by Jenvey, so I'm guessing there made properly
I've gone for the 45mm bodies which are manufactured to work best with cars above 200bhp
From the Jenvey website wrote:
---
Choice of bore size is a balanced compromise resulting from the following;
1) A larger bore leads to lower flow resistance, but obeying the laws of diminishing returns.
2) A smaller bore leads to better throttle control and response (never underestimate) and improved fuel mixing.
3) The system should be considered in total - from (at least) trumpet flange to cylinder and proportioned accordingly.
Basic references for BHP per cylinder, assuming ca 120mm from butterfly to valve head and a max of 9,000 rpm are;
Up to 30 - 30mm, up to 33 - 32mm, up to 39 - 35mm, up to 46 - 38mm, up to 51 - 40mm, up to 56 - 42mm
Up to 65 - 45mm, up to 74 - 48mm, up to 80 - 50mm
In short 45mm bodies are perfect for 65bhp/cylinder = 260bhp. You don't think you might have gone too big with the 45mm bodies?
#100: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:54 pm ---- I'm just going by what Sandy has said. I trust his judgements, probably above what jenvey say!

#102: Re: Jamie: GTi180 Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:59 pm ---- Well, I've never met a dissatisfied customer, there isn't a bad word about him on any of the forums.
