#1: Damsel in Distress!!! ECU/Electrics?! Author: hwakeford, Location: BristolPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2011 8:54 am ---- Ok guys I need your help!!
My car (2001 Y reg 2.0 gti), is causing me lots of problems and we are running out of ideas as to what is wrong - without the expense of a main Pug dealer!!
A couple of weeks ago, the engine management light came out, but went off again.. repeated this every couple of days. we decided it was therefore nothing major and ignored. No other problems with the car at all at this point, driving like a dream!
It was then knocked by a silly lil boy but all hes done is minimal damage to the bumper (respray job!).
That night I was driving home and it started making a weird squeeling noise at me everytime I dropped the clutch.. Took it to my brothers mate who confirms the clutch is on the way out.
Driving it home from the garage it started juddering and dropping revs everytime you slowed. It then completely stopped at a roundabout and will not restart.
We towed to a garage who have checked spark plugs, fuel line and all obv things... I envisaged this to be a coil pack issue (after reading lots of posts about this problem!!). One guy agreed, he did loads of electric tests and thought it was the coil pack. Ordered a new coil pack and put that in. Still no luck. Plugged into Diagnosticsand came up as being an ECU fault. We then sent the ECU down to ECU Doctor in Plymouth, who have checked it over and say the ECU is fine.. Slight sigh of relief but what the hell is wrong with it???
Any ideas would be much appreciated!

#3: Re: Damsel in Distress!!! ECU/Electrics?! Author: Surfer333, Location: Cardiff, WalesPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2011 9:34 am ---- God knows. If a diagnostic / comp test is not pulling any faults up. Well...???
Dunno...try checking fuses, the shunt fuse (as you had a bump from other car into your car), check oil levels and other electrics.
Probably not been much help. But get a 2nd and 3rd opinion from other garages - A free consultation for car etc. Try a bigger main dealer like Kwik Fit they might not charge you just to try and get to the root of the problem/s?

#5: Re: Damsel in Distress!!! ECU/Electrics?! Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2011 9:41 am ---- What did they scan it with?
If they've used a EOBD code reader, then it might say "ECU Fault" because the car isn't EOBD hence the none communication

#8: Re: Damsel in Distress!!! ECU/Electrics?! Author: hwakeford, Location: BristolPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2011 1:06 pm ---- Hmmm thats a lot of questions I don't know the answer too.. :s you may realise I am a complete girl when it comes to cars I know nothing!!
Seabook that post all reads very similar. Ill suggest it to my bro! reading that postmakes it seem very easy to check if the flywheel is damaged??
Lee and Ash - I have no idea what type of coilpack or what type of scan was used!
um to be honest the clutch pedal has always been really light, except it crunches into second gear..

Whats your VIN number, I'll try and see if its EOBD
#10: Re: Damsel in Distress!!! ECU/Electrics?! Author: hwakeford, Location: BristolPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2011 1:33 pm ---- How do I find that?!
Look at the little plastic tag in the bottom-right hand corner of the
windscreen OR in your boot area stamped on the chassis.
