#1: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 6:20 am ---- alright guys! im back again with more cooling questions! i have a 800 mile drive to do in a few weeks time and im really worrying about the car!
i cannot get it to stay at 90 degrees when going 70 and thats only with me in the car, when i do the drive its going to have 3 people in their!
i've had a new rad, a new thermostat (when the headgasket got done 6 months ago and its overheated a few times since then) flushed the cooling, fresh coolant and ive even taken the air con condenser out to improve air flow!
I really need this sorted as i cannot afford for the head gasket to go again especially when im at the wrong end of the country!
the fan kicks in at 103 degrees but i've seen a few posts on here with people saying their fans kick in at 93?
I really dont know what else i can really do so any help would be smashing
just in case anyone hasnt seen my other rants the cars a 1.4lx 8v 1999
#2: Re: long drive ahead. Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 6:21 am ---- Is it overheating then?
#3: Re: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 6:24 am ---- yeah as soon as im going 70 for over a mile its goes up to 103 fan kicks in but wont go back down unless i slow down or put it in neutral, was overheating in traffic until i got my new rad..
although i dunno what its gonna be like when the weather gets hot!
#4: Re: long drive ahead. Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 6:37 am ---- Fan running at high or low speed?
If you are driving 70, it shouldn't overheat tbh because the cool air hitting the front of the car should cool the engine down.
The needle on the cluster is accurate isn't it? and the temp sensor?
No air in the cooling system?
#5: Re: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 6:41 am ---- there's no air in the coolant system, when i've tested the fan when its at a standstill it seems to run fast but i didnt know there was two speeds?
it mainly goes up on inclines obvs doesnt when im going downhill
as for the needle i have no idea how id know if it was accurate? and is the temp sensor built into the thermostat or not?
do you know of any good degreasers as it could still have quite a lot of oil in the system maybe?
#6: Re: long drive ahead. Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 6:48 am ---- Water pump buggered?
#7: Re: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 6:50 am ---- i did think that, any signs if it has gone? and its quite a job to do is it not?
#8: Re: long drive ahead. Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 7:04 am ---- You had the timing belt done?
#9: Re: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 8:43 am ---- yeah the cambelt was done when the headgasket was replaced, it hadnt been done since leaving the factory, headgasket was done 6000 miles ago at 90000
#10: Re: long drive ahead. Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 9:05 am ---- Water pump normally gets changed when the cambelt does. Did they do it?
#11: Re: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 9:26 am ---- not sure actually, gonna check the invoice now, if you change the water pump does the cambelt need doing at the same time?

NON bio washing up liquid / powder or dishwashing tablets.
MUST be NON bio
Couple of tablets added to the expansion bottle when cold & take the car for a drive to get it nice & hot, smells lovely & also cleans all the crap out the cooling system at them same time better then stuff you can buy on the shelf.

awesome! will it need flushing afterwards?
#14: Re: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Sun May 08, 2011 10:18 am ---- also am going to replace the system coolant temperature sensor & the coolant temperature gauge sensor, where would be the best place to find them?

Rise it out with water from the hose before putting all the pipes back on.
#17: Re: long drive ahead. Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sun May 08, 2011 11:54 am ---- If it's had a new radiator and thermostat, other than replacing the temp sensor I would also think it must be the water pump. Unless the head gasket was fitted incorrectly.
#18: Re: long drive ahead. Author: jedwards, Location: east sussexPosted: Thu May 19, 2011 11:56 am ---- ok so ive just taken my front bumper to look at the wiring on the fan and found that 1 prong on both of the relays has corroded and snapped, wondering if you can replace these or do i need a whole fan unit? also could this be why my fan kicks in at 103degrees and not 93 like a lot of people on here are saying?
