#1: Is it worth getting the head gasket done? Author: Jaffamoments, Location: CheshirePosted: Mon Jun 13, 2011 2:27 am ---- 6 weeks into owning my lovely Pug, I have had so many problems with it and now I'm told that the head gasket is on its way out (oil mixing with water etc etc)
To paint you a picture - I've been onto Trading Standards to see whether I have a leg to stand on with the trader that sold me the car as I've had it a matter of weeks. It appears I havent as I've purchased an older car and we should expect such problems to happen...So..it looks like i'm going to have the bite the bullet and pay for head gasket.
A colleague has told me DONT DO IT - purely because it could go wrong again within a matter of months. I cant afford to keep getting it done. The car is lovely (see pic in signature - click on link) but it's not worth £1000's. So I really need some help. Is it worth it? Can it go wrong? Is there anything I could do to protect myself (ie guarantee on part or does it not work like that?)
Really appreciate any advice you can give.
PS - the car runs wonderfully well. Looks nice and ideally i dont want to get shot. Its done 81,000 miles.

The main reason why gaskets go after months is because the heads been warped from the orig gasket going and not skimmed when the new ones been fitted.

what a neglectful owner i am x

Unfortunately it looks like it has to be done..and I should ensure it's done properly. The plot thickens as the mechanic that is going to do this is a "friend" of the trader. The trader has agreed for me to pay £200 and he will cover the rest. Long story involving warranty issues.....
Not as straight forward as it looks really

if its been going for over 3 years the heads probably warped pays to get the head skimmed or it will go again, also dont forget you need new bolts because they stretch and cannot be used again

It appears it had a slight split on the head hence the water and the oil mixing together. Fingers crossed that I'll have no problems for a few months
