#1: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu Jun 16, 2011 5:51 am ---- Ok, so I've been through a few (number 4 now I think..), I've settled on this one as my new project car.
It's terribly dirty at the moment as I drove it back the 150 miles in the tipping rain from Yorkshire.
Spec:
60k miles on old engine, 15 miles on a brand new recon engine that's not even been run in yet (with all new internals, only the block has been used)
Dbilas inlet manifold and Pipercross induction
Full Milltek Sport Exhaust
Resprayed in White (obviously) only 2 small areas of chipping
Standard wheels in Black (I'm removing these asap though)
Drilled/Grooved discs
MMG rear diffuser
Rear Turbo Lip Spoiler
Interior sections finished in white
Re-trimmed leather seats with centre white band
New engine block:

#8: Re: Seb's New VX220 Project Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu Jun 16, 2011 6:34 am ---- I am planning to keep it N/A for the time being. But doing some small jobs like a full suspension refresh, all the bushes, ball joints etc are being replaced. Wishbones to be powdercoated. Sticking some decent adjustable dampers on it. New wheels and tyres (16/17 combo as I had before). Then getting out to a few tracks this year, when that all dies down later in the year, possibly around September, I'll be looking at moving forward onto a full forged 300bhp supercharged engine, when I have more time to do it.

#11: Re: Seb's New VX220 Project Author: davieboy86, Location: Kent,Posted: Thu Jun 16, 2011 8:17 am ---- Hey seb,
looks good man, how come you keep getting these?
I kept seeing you buying/ selling these, i always wondered. i mean they look pretty sweet and everything but what draws them to you? are they for racing? speed? quite light i would guess?
Are you building your dream racer and finally found the right base after a few false starts?
#12: Re: Seb's New VX220 Project Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu Jun 16, 2011 8:45 am ---- My first one was a great car, but had to sell due to moving house, the red and blue were both owned by close friends who needed to get rid, as is the Elise. It was never really a plan to keep them, just fix up/MOT/Tax and sell them really.
I had some very specific criteria for my 'own' car.
I wanted under 60k, new engine or new paintwork (engine is being rebuilt anyway and I wanted something that was aesthetically clean), mostly standard or only mods that I would be doing anyway (for instance the diffuser). It will be a half racer half 'nicely finished' car.
Evidently they are so light that adding small things won't make any difference and there's practically nothing you can remove from them anyway to make it worth your time, unless you're entering time attack or something.

That is all.
#14: Re: Seb's New VX220 Project Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu Jun 16, 2011 10:49 am ---- I've driven it about 200 miles so far, just took it out on the dual carriageway to open it up a little and it's the quickest N/A I've driven, the Dbilas manifold/induction makes a stupidly loud roaring noise on WOT
#15: Re: Seb's New VX220 Project Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Jun 18, 2011 4:32 pm ---- Spent some of the day sorting a few niggles.
Masked off and sanded down/filled/sanded the rear lip spoiler as it has a bit missing and was finished in matt black (badly) so I aim to repaint that soon.
Wired in a fan cut-in switch into the centre console as a temporary solution until I get the top hose and adjustable fan controller put in.
Bruised hands and many cuts later and I de-lensed and masked up the light units for spraying tomorrow.

#18: Re: Seb's New VX220 Project Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sun Jun 19, 2011 4:32 pm ---- Thanks guys.
Slightly more productive day today but spent some time with the family for father's day and was the old dear's birthday yesterday.
Masked off the rear clam to get the lip spoiler sanded down, painted and clearcoated.
Also masked off all the grilles on the front mouth/bonnet/bootlid/side vents/exhaust vent and gave them a coat of black hammerite to freshen them up.
While the spoiler was curing finished off the lights and re-sealed.
Finished spoiler off and left it to dry before running over with a fine grit sandpaper and machine polishing. It's not great, but it's ok for a DIY job.
Finished off for the day with a quick (and I mean very quick) clean
P.S. Photobucket seems to be having issues atm so pics might not load immediately.

#31: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Jun 29, 2011 6:59 am ---- Up on stands ready for me to start work when I get back from Germany.
Main things to do are:
Remove front clam and fit new rad and twin fans (Not going charged until end of the year, so will make fair use of them before fitting to the pre-rad.
Fit cool running thermostat
Blank off EGR valve and fit EGR cheater
Source some other wheels.. (TD 1.2s - black please if you have any )
Clean up suspension and under arches, coat wishbones etc
Suspension refresh - all bushes and ball joints/track rod ends to be done

I'm quite surprised the car didn't come out completely disgusting. It has dirt ALL over it at the moment. Not been cleaned properly since I've had it.
I'll sort all the dirty bits out when I get back.
Thanks J-dog, the stickers are meant for the VX220 Annual National club meeting over on Anglesey, but it looks like I'm not going to be going IN the VX220 now! I'll probably just leave them on anyway, quite like them.
#35: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Uz, Location: No Man's LandPosted: Wed Jun 29, 2011 12:38 pm ---- I've been watching this from the start and I've got to say out of all the ones you've had this has got to be the nicest once of all. Looking forward to seeing this with a blower fitted and finding out what sort of results you get from it.
I do have a very big soft spot for these. There's a chap in Evesham whose's got a red turbo VX220, love it too bits and sounds absolutely gorgeous.
#36: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Jun 29, 2011 4:06 pm ---- It will be a much more planned out project than the silver one was. It's going to get everything done properly and I will take my time over it.
They are fantastic cars, nothing to boast about in 'pub talk', "Oh, it's a vauxhall with 145bhp, big deal!", but they weigh almost nothing and pull effortlessly.
#37: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Jul 18, 2011 3:23 am ---- Just bought a new set of TD 1.2s in gloss black, gave them a good few layers of wax and sealant before I put some tyres on, getting some covers made up for the wheel caps to cover the TD logo and be replaced with the VX220 logo.
Front clam is now off and every single one of the radiator surround bolts seems to be rusted solid, already drilled 4 of them out.
Rear arch protectors are now black, along with the door grab handles.
No pictures just yet, but hopefully I'll get around to fitting the new rad at some point!
#38: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Callum206, Location: West SussexPosted: Wed Jul 20, 2011 4:53 am ---- Sounds like its getting there get some pics up
#39: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Jul 20, 2011 12:35 pm ---- Arches sorted (handles and rear griffing/VX220 badges are also done):
Rad replacement time:
EGR Blanking plate and cheater installed:
Smaller nameplates - the others were too large:
#40: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sat Jul 23, 2011 4:29 pm ---- Doing some repairs on the bodywork where bubbling had started showing its head. Mid repair:
Seats out to swap for black cloth ones:
Clam repairs:
Almost done:
Badges and arches back on:
#41: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Andrew, Location: Black Country Ay IPosted: Sat Jul 23, 2011 5:52 pm ---- Sweet, nice job on the repairs
#42: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sun Jul 24, 2011 1:30 am ---- Well, it's not professional but it covers up the flaking paint from before so if there are a few imperfections, I can live with that on a fibre glass car.
#43: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2011 3:46 am ---- So, I got back home at 10 last night and set to work removing the old rad and fixing the new one up:
Apologies for the lighting, it was about 11pm
#44: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu Jul 28, 2011 5:09 pm ---- I need the car tomorrow as I'm going away in it so I had to take a day off to sort it out, that and I'd miss silverstone next week if I didn't get it done.
Radiator and surround sorted:
Washed the tub down and fitted the other seats in:
Coolant in, bleeding the system (blue this time, I didn't like the pink before ):
Did an oil change and just thought I'd throw this one in as the engine looks so nice and clean:
Almost ready (awaiting delivery of tyres tomorrow):
#45: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu Jul 28, 2011 5:11 pm ---- And yes, the door paintwork is obvious, I ran out of time to find a colour matched paint so just got on with it so I can use the damn car.
Will get it painted in a booth in a few weeks time when I can get a slot!

There's normally a winged 'V' that spans the grille with a badge in the centre. I might try and source one and do it in White with a black badge.
#56: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 4:43 pm ---- Looks good pal! Loving the white theme!!
#57: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Aug 05, 2011 7:08 am ---- Cheers matey, I broke the car though, or it broke itself.
Getting a misfire/cut out, so I'm putting it back up on stands and the rear clam is coming off this time and engine getting worked on.
#58: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Sun Sep 04, 2011 1:24 pm ---- Over one month and finally done something.
Clam off.
Shiny engine again!
Rain proofed just in case.
That's all I had time for today unfortunately.
#59: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Fri Sep 09, 2011 12:36 pm ---- After a month on axle stands, I've finally swapped back to the standard inlet manifold and intake setup and changed an injector that I think is causing a few problems. Everything checked out, just need to get the clam back on, fit another EGR cheater and get the caliper on, then it's off to the bodyshop....!
#60: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Nov 14, 2011 11:07 am ---- I drove it again for the first time in what, 7 weeks, I think!

10/10
#62: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Nov 14, 2011 4:41 pm ---- Haha, thanks for that mate, I'm dropping it off to get the hardtop, V and some of the door/clam painted properly in the next week or so hopefully will look much nicer soon!
#63: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:47 pm ---- Got it back now after about two months! Complete with painted hard top, front clam, doors and some fibre glass reworking on the light brackets
Gave it a wash, put the cover on, and will revisit it when the weather gets a bit better.
Plans are to properly bleed the brake system, fit a new timing chain and grab some Gaz to stiffen it up and drop it down a little, then perhaps by the time that's done I can tax it again!
#64: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:52 pm ---- Nicest VX220 you've had so far Sebbage.
#65: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:59 pm ---- Cheers dude, still reminds me of the first one when it was SC'd though as the exhaust note is identical and it's almost the same spec wise.
#67: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Apr 03, 2012 2:29 pm ---- Back on axle stands.
Old brakes not looking too healthy....
Gave things a quick coat of black hammerite.
And fitted the Gaz
Still sat on axle stands as I've got one wheel left to do
#68: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: richpowell91, Location: Melton Mowbray LeicestershirePosted: Tue Apr 03, 2012 2:37 pm ---- Love the project, i had a quick go in one a while back and have been hoping to own one ever since.
Just out of interest are the two pot front calipers the same as the lotus ones?
#69: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Apr 03, 2012 4:06 pm ---- They are indeed, front are AP, rear are brembo.
#71: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Apr 03, 2012 4:49 pm ---- You'd have to double check on fitment though - just to make sure, I know the calipers are pretty much the same.
#72: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: richpowell91, Location: Melton Mowbray LeicestershirePosted: Tue Apr 03, 2012 4:58 pm ---- Thanks looking at pictures online of them they seem to be the same fitment, i dont suppose you happen to know what a fair price for a set are do you?
#73: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Apr 04, 2012 12:05 am ---- Looks like the last brand new set of fronts went for £175 for both, the last brand new set of rears went for £200.
#74: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Apr 02, 2013 3:48 pm ---- Should probably update this to say it's been sold - the Z4 is now my main car.

#75: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: MattyP, Location: PlymouthPosted: Tue Apr 02, 2013 4:57 pm ---- sorry to hear you had to sell it mate but i guess we all have to make the sacrifice sooner or later, i'm sure you can get the z4 looking really nice
#76: Re: Seb's Project WhiteVX Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Apr 03, 2013 5:18 am ---- A friend has done the job for me, he decided to drive into it the other day so it has a rather malformed bumper at the moment.
