Hi what are the signs that the head gasket is going i have a oil leak which the mechanic said the gasket will need replacing. I seen a few threads on here were owners cars have gasket problems with white stuff on the cap which my dont have is there different types of gasket problems my water bottle is brown inside but has been like that since i had the car 4 years ago any help thx

My coolant bottle is a bit murky too with a small oil leak and one independnet garage last year was quick to point out it needs a new head gasket.

A year later, a check at the dealer showed all systems go, no problems.

In my experience I wouldn't consider an oil leak + murky coolant bottle enough reason to replace the head gasket. Your best waiting until the oil cap turns mayo-ie, or you suffer cooling issues.

Someone else whos more of an expert might be able to clarify more!

Do you mean its a good sign that the gasket could be ok as there's no white mayo type stuff

when you say water bottle do you mean coolant?

What was your oil leak problem had a oil change not so long ago and the oil seems to be dripping off some wires/tubes

Mines been brown for 2 years. Hasnt seemed to raise any issues.

As for my oil leak, i'm not sure. The advisory on the invoice is just noted as

"Advise - Small oil leak"

So not particularly descriptive. I dont seem to be losing an oil, so it must be very small!

From what you describe your 206 looks alot like mine, I wouldnt worry too much until you see the more obvious tell tell signs. You could do the head gasket now, but it might go strong for years more!

Also, I notice you live near me! Which garage are you taking the car to?

I'd change the coolant if I were you if it's been in for 5 years and is brown Razz

Just make sure you get the right stuff, the red and blue coolants shouldn't be mixed.

Maybe that's what happened and it's silted?

I take it to WJHeard as hes a mate but not to sure he did the MOT this time round as i told him about the leak and when he gave the car back he said he got some on to clean the oil leak up which makes me think some else in the garage looked at it and hes just told me what the other person told him

What Seb says seems to make sense.

If you are concerned i'd definetly take it somewhere else just to get someone elses opinion, you can always go back to them if you find there is cause for concern.

Just get a garage to flush the coolant system and add some fresh. It wont cost alot. was £12 for me I think.

maybe its been filled with tap water, which i was always told would start scaling.

Far better of using distilled or deionised water in the cooling system mixed 50 / 50 with a decent coolant / antifreeze.

Stick it in the dishwasher if you have one.

OR

NON bio dishwasher or washing up powder / liquid / tablets & take the car for a drive to get it up to a decent temp, helps clean the cooling system out wonderful.

Whatever you use it MUST, I repeat MUST be NON bio!

I got good old deionised mixed with a decent antifreeze, what i always used in the Red 206 when i swapped the rad and flushed it.

Ive got deionised water on tap at work Laughing

We get around 4 - 6 months out of a cartridge depending on how many & how often the batteries get topped up.

Funnily enough my cars just come from the garage the other day to have the head gasket changed, the massive sign was the leaking although it drove a good 1000 miles before it was changed Smile
