#1: Ape's Leon Cupra R 225 *SOLD* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Sun Feb 07, 2010 6:19 pm ---- I sold my 206 on the 27th July 2009, exactly 4 years (to the day) after I bought it brand new from the Dealer in Worcester.
I was hunting for a decent Evo 5 and after having one sold from under my nose (literally) I joked about buying my friends Leon. A few weeks later it was mine Got a stupidly good price on it and could easily get a couple of grand more than what I paid for it, which would make for a nice Evo 6, but it would be a bit harsh on my good friend if I made that kind of money on him
So.... Here is my new Project:
2006 SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 (BAM Engine)
Lowered 30mm rear, 20mm front on AP Coilovers
Fast Road Geometry Setup (Negative Camber all round and Corner Weighted)
Standard 18"s painted Megane R26R Red
Grooved EBC Disks and Ferodo DS2500 Premier Pads
Polished Boost Pipes and Manifold
TurboSmart Dualport Dump Valve (Recirc)
Private Plates (3/4 size front plate)
Obligitary Pole-Position Sticker on the Tailgate
Rear Wiper Conversion
Front Aero Wipers Fitted
I had to clean the Engine a bit when I first got him:
Before Gearbox Clean
After Clean:
General Clean Engine
Arty Car Park Shots:
Next up:
CamBelt, Waterpump, Tensioner Pulley and Pulley Damper Change
Full Service (Oil, Plugs, Filters, Grease up etc)
Brake Fluid changed for 5.1 DOT
I'm off to the Nurburgring in April for a week or so, and when I get back he'll have another Service, followed by:
3" Downpipe
Sports / Racing CAT
3" Blueflame System
Stage 2 / Custom Map.
Which should get him to the 280bhp mark, with even more torque

You doing any more styling changes to it, or is all performance from here on in?

#6: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Sun Feb 07, 2010 6:26 pm ---- I thought about getting it done before the trip, but to be honest... I've only just started pushing it to its limits over the last couple of weeks. I only use it weekends, so learning its characteristics have taken me longer than normal. It's one hell of a jump from the Pug, lift off oversteer is still good fun, but happens at much higher speeds because it is so well planted. I would like to get used to it's standard power and with a weeks worth of solid driving I'll achieve that easily. Then I'll get the work done and go back in the summer (hopefully!) and see the difference

I'd like to do a Red, Silver and Carbon Theme. The "S" Badges will be done in red, a carbon splitter, red engine hoses (Forge or Samco) and carbon dressy bits. But thats a long way off, I want the performance first, the tarting up is the last phase
Oh, I almost forgot - I'll be getting a Liquid Gauge for it too, shows Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Boost, G Force, Fault codes etc, fits in the air vent and has full diagnostics etc. Fits neatly in the Drivers side Air Vent:
Cheers for the comments all, the wheels are fantastic lol. A real Marmite Modification

Bit of a quick update,
Cambelt and Service is all done now (thanks again to Clarks in Kidderminster, top service, top communication, good price and generally exceptionally professional). The LCR was waxed again today (including the wheels), glass / interior done and polished. And the old corroded and crusty R badges were replaced. Also changed the black Pole-Positon Stickers to Red.
Waxed:
R Badges:
Old and New Badges together
Meep with Akimbo Hairdriers
Old Badge Removed
Quick bit of polishing to remove old residue and crud
Nice and new and shiny

I'm just umming and arrring about getting my liquid gauge this weekend.
#30: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 Author: calum001, Location: FifePosted: Fri Feb 19, 2010 5:11 am ---- liquid guage looks like a nice piece of kit like, it's just a pity the only option is for the window side vent
#31: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Fri Feb 19, 2010 5:14 am ---- It depends, if you're handy with fibreglass it can be mounted anywhere. Some people have adapted it for the middle vents also, along with ashtray mounting etc.
I don't use the drivers vent that much to be honest, there's a window demister vent built into the top of the dash which does the trick.

RPM's are bang on. MPH is just about bang on with GPS. etc...
it wasn't cheap like! reader was £140 and the app was about £23...

Yep, he's right, it provides useless nerd info, such as when your oil temperature is sufficient so you can open it up without damaging anything, or you can find out the oil temperatures reached when used properly (on track etc). Boost Pressure readings so you can see if there are any leaks or problems. Fault codes that may crop up without illuminating the EML etc. Air/Fuel Ratio so you can monitor if its leaning out too much etc. Pretty Useless to be honest.
The full list is a couple of posts up....

I got a delivery today My Race Diagnostics Liquid Gauge:

Oh yeah, also got a SEAT tax holder as well

It took a fair bit of sanding, and removing the vent slat's wasn't too pretty. I used some of the bubblewrap packing as a heatshield in the vent and packed it tight. The Gauge is brilliant, accurate and easy to use. Bhp measured at 230bhp, with torque at 234lb ft, will see at the P Torque Rolling Road day how it compares against a Rolling Road etc. Boost peaked at 16.something psi, oil temperature stayed at around 90. The only fault code I got was regarding the N249 which I've bypassed so no problems there. My only gripe with it is the multi graph - seems to have a problem with it and after a short while it resets its communication due to an error. Being able to reset the Throttle Body through it is a nice touch also.
All in all, very pleased with it, not too hard to install and it isn't too distracting whilst driving either. Top product!

#47: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *Liquid Gauge Fitted* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Fri Mar 05, 2010 6:04 am ---- Cheers bud. Having the computer in the air vent I've found is better than having gauges going up the A-pillar as it's got multiple gauges all in one unit. Looks neat as well and will reset the throttle body, the bhp and torque readings I'd say were accurate to within a couple of %, it lets you read and clear fault codes and lets you do MAF adaption as well. All usefull stuff
#48: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *Liquid Gauge Fitted* Author: twed207, Location: borders, near carlisle.Posted: Fri Mar 05, 2010 6:37 am ---- ape, what's MAF adaption?
#49: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *Liquid Gauge Fitted* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Fri Mar 05, 2010 6:41 am ---- Because the Liquid Gauge is capable of reading VAG engines up to 500bhp, it needs to accommodate for the different MAF's and pipework people use when running that sort of power.
If you use an intake pipe with a bigger bore than standard, the volume of air passing the MAF will be greater. If you don't tell the gauge then it will calculate based on standard pipes. There's a bit of a formula you use to work out what the MAF adaption should be, it's all in the manual

#52: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *Liquid Gauge Fitted* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Thu Mar 11, 2010 5:02 am ---- Cheers lads,
I've been getting more into the inner workings of it of late, some of the info it gives you is brilliant. The 0-60 timing is accurate as well, have yet to test the 0-100 though!
current 0-60 I've nailed down to 6.2 seconds, that was with too much wheelspin, will need to hone that a bit
Exhaust temperatures surprised me, when all warmed up and happily bundling along they 600degrees C +! giving it beans takes it over 800degrees C!
I've had to buy a few bits for travelling to the Ring which is fast approaching, including some paint as one of the spokes has a chip on it from a stone, should be finished painting it by the end of tonight. Itching to get the exhaust and remap done now though - Front Mount Intercooler (sprayed black to stop it drawing attention) is on the cards too
#53: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *Liquid Gauge Fitted* Author: GazRG, Location: Bournemouth/CardiffPosted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 11:09 am ---- Car is looking well mate, like the touches you've put on it. Especially love that vent computer, looks so cool! I'd be playing with it all the time though
#54: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *Liquid Gauge Fitted* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 12:13 pm ----
The normal routine is:
Key in ignition,
Turn on LG,
Check Fault Codes
Reset Throttle Body
Select Oil Temp, drive until Oil Temp is at normal operating temperature (about 85degrees C), with brief checks of intake temps whilst the oil warms up
Once warm, Select Boost and off we go
I'll flick between various screens whilst driving, but you can do it without looking, and then reading the info is the same as looking at the speedo etc. I use Boost Pressure, Oil Temp and AFR the most, and sometimes jump to the Bhp / Torque Calc, and occasionally the 0-60 timer

The new tyres are brilliant. They don't hop like the P Zero Nero Rosso's that were on it previously, they scuff a bit and then dig in without bouncing the front of the car. They look pretty cool too Haven't really tested the grip at the moment, didn't want to get the car mucky again after just cleaning it

Took a while but was worth it, they filled them with nitrogen as well for me too.

Can you tell much difference with the Nitrogen? Ive heard good things as it prolongs tyre life and still feels more comfortable?

#68: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *New Sticky Tyres Fitted* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Mon Mar 29, 2010 12:51 pm ---- Andy - They're in a different league to P Zero's. £90 each with free delivery
Hilly - not yet to be honest, although it went from the Tyre fitter straight back to be washed. I scrubbed them up a bit and the tyres weren't warm, but whether it's me being too gentle with it or whether its the nitrogen I couldn't tell.
I'll use Rockingham (FCS) as a benchmark, they started melting a bit with the 206 when I took Seb round last year. I did push it a bit too hard there though I'll taking the Leon round and see what happens (taking into account the power difference, weight difference etc).
Carol - Cheers! It's a marmite car

I have a free pax lap as well this year, you want to come with me (Jamie has the other sessions ^^)
I think nitrogen will really only make a difference when you get on track, however it will decrease the range at which your pressure will change too, so bear that in mind

To say I can't wait, is an understatement, especially after recent events and then forking out close to £1000 in maintenance ready for the trip!

My first Lap was done in 10:12 (wet / damp and dry track), and a Sub 10 minutes from the Bilstein Bridge to the R8 V10 Gantry as well
Car is undamaged although I need to get some new pads, I've worn the current ones down to the backing plate (almost) getting the last lap of the trip in!
I've got over a thousand photo's to sort through. Plus a Rally Experience day to be at tomorrow morning, so pictures will be up over the next few days.

Where did J find the photo's of him on track? I didn't have any taken of mine on track (that I know of) but I bumped into some chaps with camera's in areas where you're not supposed to be so wonder if they upload them etc
Next performance mods are:
Forger Front Mount Intercooler
3" Blueflame Turbo Back System (with Motorsport Cat)
Custom Remap.
They'll be done before FCS hopefully, I need to rejig my money and sort my priorities out again first though.

Fair play to Badger 5, he delivered when he said he would. Just gotta fit them tomorrow. They don't seem to be too thick compared to ones I've replaced in the past. Still, they stop well!
#109: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *New Tarty Touches Added* Author: Dillon, Location: KentPosted: Fri Apr 16, 2010 12:47 pm ---- They look very innocuous, No bright colours or writing on them it's what they do though that counts does this mean your around the weekend then....
#110: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *New Tarty Touches Added* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Fri Apr 16, 2010 12:55 pm ---- Not sure yet matey, I'll be fitting the pads in the morning, and getting them bedded in. Depending on that, and other things that are happening saturday will be determining my weekend. I'll catch you on msn / fb chat and explain pal.
#111: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *New Brakes* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Sat May 15, 2010 2:06 pm ---- After a few weeks between purchasing, and actually getting round to it, the new pads and fluid were fitted today Since boiling them at Combe, they've been very iffy under use and the pads had generated quite a bit of braking wobble, which I thought were warped discs. The old pads still at a few mm on them but I thought I'd try the cheap (gulp) option and replace the pads, which were £130 to buy.
Another job on the list was to replace the brake fluid. I was originally going to use Super4 DOT Brake Fluid but found some Halfords DOT 5.1 fluid which exceeds the spec of 5.1 etc etc. Not the best make of Brake Fluid, but more than adequate and it will be changed every 6 months or so anyway.
Following this, I decided it would be a good idea to change the oil and filter, I have always changed the oil on my cars after 5,000 miles (apart from my company car!) and its normally pretty clean. The LCR however came out a bit black so... A few more 5k oil changes should change that though!
Finally, we needed to see what was causing my front wheels to work their way loose. They needed tightening at Combe, and at the Nurburgring. After a bit of deliberation we've worked out that the powdercoating on the wheels is to blame. The Wheelbolts are radiused, and need metal to metal contact with the wheel to secure them. The powdercoat is preventing this fully, and when it gets hot and expands, the normal virbation etc is working them loose. We've torqued them up properly for now but will be rectifying this next week with a dremel. We'll also be sorting the rear pads and discs with new ones when they arrive during next week.
Oh oh... AND I bought some 5mm spacers for the rear as the wheels always seemed to be a bit too recessed in the arches. Might buy some front ones too but we'll see
Looks much better now, will report back on any handling improvement, although widening the track should make some difference.
Expensive... Must remember is Smiles per Gallon, not Miles per Gallon! (repeat until you believe it!)
#112: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *New Brakes* Author: Lodey, Location: Penzance & Falmouth CornwallPosted: Sat May 15, 2010 2:45 pm ---- Ape how much is your lowered by?
#113: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *New Brakes* Author: Ape, Location: Clipping the Apex!Posted: Sat May 15, 2010 2:47 pm ---- It's lowered 30mm all round, but the LCR is lower than other Leon's as standard anyway but about 20-30mm I believe. So its down a fair bit! Could go more but it's not that practical as it is!
#114: Re: Ape's SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 *New Brakes* Author: Lodey, Location: Penzance & Falmouth CornwallPosted: Sat May 15, 2010 2:54 pm ---- cool, just wondering as it looks like you still have standard drop links on it.
