#1: What is your average MPG? Author: Andrew, Location: Black Country Ay I PostPosted: Mon Sep 05, 2011 4:55 am

I've recently got 170 miles out of half a tank town driving only, so that is about 31mpg

I tend to change gear at 2.5 - 3k, no engine mods

I am wondering if this is good for a 1.4 8v, and interested to know what everyone else seems to average

The problem is you can't measure it on the gauge. It's so far off it's unbelievable.

You can only really measure by how many miles you do then filling up and calculating it from how much you put back in the tank.

In the GTi I could get to 200 on half a tank but then it would flick the light on at 330... (£65)

I've been using Fuelly which you update with the miles on the clock every time you fuel up, how much you fuel up by etc Smile seems to average around 30mpg

1.4 8v Probably about 30 MPG the problem is i have terrible roads around me to drive on a lot of hills etc not sure how badly that would effect it.

I have drove to silverstone and back, let idle for about 1 and half on full tilt with the sound system (so revs dipping etc)

And still have quater and an 1/8th left over

(1.4, lots of weight, decat, back box, 1.6 inlet)

Yea Andrew my mpg is a mix of lane driving and town, can't believe the 1.4's only get 30ish around town, would have thought it was slightly more

My 1.4 is terrible, £30 strugles to get 200 miles, and thats after that fuel lights been on for the last 20 and im right down the bottom of the reserve on the gauge. The trouble with the 1.4s is it doesnt have the power for the weight of the car in the same respect yours does. So in the same day to day town driving with a steady right foot yours will do the same if not more miles to the gallon as its not being worked like the 1.4 is.

I use fuel calculator and my average with engine mods etc is 45mpg

Dash comp says I get about 47 so not to far off, that's city driving and country driving no motorways

Yer it's why I want to go up an engine size. For the crap MPG it really doesnt justify the running costs/lack of power. Thanks mate Smile

I hate it when people post up these kinds of topics,

You all have different driving styles, different cars/engines, service your car differently, use different fuel, so many differents....

So how on earth do you think that this topic will help????

As for why the 1.4's are s**t on mpg, is because the 1.4 engine itself is s**t and compared to other 1.4s of that time!

Just remember the 180 is a younger engine, and more of an advanced engine as to fuel MPG etc etc

Why read it then? There is no need to be like that when I just wanted to start a conversation about other peoples cars. Just curious as to what other engine sizes got, and how other people drive to return their mpg figures.

To give you ideas on what you have missed out on...

-Service details, what oil, what filters, how often, that will all effects MPG,
-Type of fuel you use
-Time of the day and the weather, including temperature, wind speed, wind direction all effects MPG
-How you drive, do you engine break, are you harsh on your brakes, do you let your engine warm up before setting off, all effects MPG
-Tyres, what type do you use, how bald are they, how are they cambered?
-Weight in the car, how heavy are you, have you got extra weight like subs boxes etc, do u drive with other people in the car

Have I missed anything?

Not at all pal, I actually have quite a heavy right foot Wink
I think I get that kind of mpg by staying at a constant speed on the lanes on the way to work, it's 33 miles to work and virtually no stops at junctions etc, also the noise of the janspeed makes me accelerate harder than normal

Induction kit and exhaust don't help and i have a heavy right foot.

The best i've ever had out of a full tank was 350miles, but i had to really work on driving sensibly Razz

That's about my experience also; 8,4 - 8,5 liters/100 km which works out to somewhere between 33 and 34 mpg (UK). In city traffic (fairly main routes, not extreme city center) it definitely pays to look ahead and coast instead of slamming on the brakes at the light. Not that I don't like to step on it if I happen to be up front at a red light... Whistle... Same with stop and go queues, I try to roll slowly continuously rather than accelerate, brake, accelerate etc
My commute is about 75% motorway, currently with highly annoying roadworks, and rest as above

My car varies considerably.

1.4hdi - as standard I get about 56mpg.
When it was remapped it'd give 58mpg.

Dependant upon trips etc i've varied - 4 up to wales with camping gear etc (no spare space in car) I got 48mpg.

Best I've had is 62mpg when i went accross France.

Really does vary quite a bit
