#1: Is the 206 gti 180 good? Author: Darien, Location: Cwmbran, South WalesPosted: Tue Oct 04, 2011 6:30 am ---- Hey there! New to this site
I bought a black 206 gti 180 yesterday, I've wanted one for ages since I like the look of them
But literally all i've heard for weeks off people is that they are bad cars, things go wrong on them al lthe time, gear change is horrible, etc I'm only 20 so I can't really be paying loads of money all the time on tyres, brake pads, engine problems etc :/
So to all of you that have 180's, could you just give me a bit of information about what they are like to drive, if they are rleiable, if any of you have had any major problems? It really gave me second thoughts hearing all these bad things about them, even the reviews I've read online don't seem to promising
Thanks!

Yeah they can can be s**t
It's hardly a 2011 built, top of the range Porsche. It's a new ish Peugeot. But I still love my 180
#3: Re: Is the 206 gti 180 good? Author: Big_Rich180, Posted: Tue Oct 04, 2011 6:33 am ---- Welcome.
The tyres and brakes are down to your driving so if they go quickly..its your fault lol
It depends really how your 180 has been looked after in the past.
I had plenty of issues with my 180 and other people have non....just pot luck i think.
Epic car though, id have another
#4: Re: Is the 206 gti 180 good? Author: tomd0801754, Location: MoscowPosted: Tue Oct 04, 2011 6:34 am ---- For every person who hears good news, three hear bad.
Basically people are quicker to write bad reviews than good. Yes it is an all around good car. But what would you compare it to? Compared to a Audi R8 its sh*te. Compared to a Fiat Panda, its immense.
Reliability - I've never heard any major issues on the mass. If a car has had a good life then it will be reliable.
Money on tyres and brake pads - You control that, not the car. Thats general wear and tear.
#5: Re: Is the 206 gti 180 good? Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Tue Oct 04, 2011 6:34 am ---- Good points:
best car in its price range... quick, handles amazingly, good looking, lots of luxories.
Engine is reliable, barely anyone has any problems with them (touch wood).
Puts a smile on most owners faces
Bad points:
A lot of people put a downer on the 180 because its french and are jealous that it is better than a lot of their cars
Expensive to run
Gear change is a bit poo, but assure me you can get over tha for the fun you'll have
Its not quite as quick as clio sports of the same age
EDIT.. when i first got mine, i had so many haters, older friends with fiesta ST's they soon shut up when they saw how much of a go-kart it was

Not entierly true, they are the same on the road, on track it may be a different story but on the road they are the same.
#9: Re: Is the 206 gti 180 good? Author: Darien, Location: Cwmbran, South WalesPosted: Tue Oct 04, 2011 6:42 am ---- Well I paid £1200 for it, which I assume is extremely cheap for these? It hasnt really got any dents or marks or anything, plus I bought it from a garage who has given it a look over and said it was fine
It looks really nice, I'm stretching my money to be able to buy + run it, but I'm happy to have a nice car, as my Corsa C sxi isn't in the best of conditions :L
I'm planning to drive normal! not flying about in this because i'll probably die lmao!

The only other things I replaced was tyres brakes and service parts which are all cosmetic. Service it well every time it's due and don't neglect it you should be fine. I still miss mine loved the handling and how people underestimate it till they see it go great cars.

Think if you dont drive it like you stole it then it should last you a while and be reasonably economical. Jeremy Clarkson liked it!
On Thursday I drove it round the Top Gear track and it was simply staggering. I’m loathe to use the word perfect but the combined effect of variable assistance power steering, dual-rate springs, sharp dampers and truly magnificent front seats that nail you in place is that you can absolutely fly.

I remember asking the exact same questions when I first bought my GTi 180.
To make the mirrors fold in - where the switch is to adjust the mirrors, you have to turn it left to adjust the left mirror and right to adjust the right mirror. You need to twist that little switch 180 degreees, so it's little white arrow is facing to the rear of the car

If it has had a good quality repair then no it doesnt matter.
I assume there are no knocks or bangs from it?
Have you had a look underneath to see if everythings straight and what not?
If all is good then you've got your self a good car at good money...just try not to hammer it to much

Aw thank you I'll have a look later! I did put them in manually last night though for the first night, would that have damaged them? I didn't know they were electric :/
and nope no noises or anything, just the power of the engine I havent looked underneath yet, tbh I'm not sure what I'd be looking for, but I bought it from a garage and he said it's all fine when he looked it over, he did an MOT on it and all, he just didn't know what had been repaired

brakes are actually good on it! when I picked it up yesterday I thought holy s**t I can't drive this :L but after having a few hours driving I actually quite like it, seats are comfy, car looks nice, it picks up great!

watch out for lift of oversteer. Obviously you have not experienced that before as with corsas you just get understeer and I think some more understeer as well.

You could try contacting the previous owner to see if they have any of the stuff for the car or at least tell you the service history.
£300 is a good price, I'll be taking it to him for mine in the near future as he's a bit of an expert on these. Its only got 28k on the clock but it's now 5 years old so needs doing within the next few months. You'll be looking at £400-£450 in an independant garage, I don't know what the main stealers would charge?......and if they don't do it right you'll be mighty upset.

Seeing as the cambelt is under a plastic cover I doubt the previous owner checked it.
Just get the belt replaced, when it snaps it WILL bend the valves & it will cost a fortune to fix.

bit hard to tell just by looking mate your better off just getting it done asap also make sure you do a full cambelt kit, rollers and tensioner not just the belt aswell as the waterpump

and what if it does and the belt snaps and fubbers your engine then your wish you had done it.
i had my 180 less than a mth and done less than 200 miles in it before i had mine done really not worth the risk not to do it imho.
and not trying to be rude or patronising to you but you should have checked for this sort of thing before you brought the car.then you can either knock the cost off or be prepaired for the bill.

Author: Darien, Location: Cwmbran, South WalesPosted: Thu Oct 06, 2011 1:00 pm ---- The guy I bought it off didn't know since he had only recently had it, and it was off a garage so i expected it had been looked at :/ nah i appreciate what your saying lol the car was £1200 though so couldnt knock much more off
