#1: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Oct 19, 2011 2:30 pm ---- As some may know, i recently got some recaro seats out of an Evo 4 with the intention of retriming them in some thick lush quality leather.
so, what colour should i go for? (two more shades of tan to be added when the samples arrive) - the red is actuly really nice in the flesh, not in your face at all.
i thought i'd do a little post of my progress so far.
Jobs Done:
Striping chairs down
Leather Supplier and samples sourced.
Industrial Sewing machine aquired and set up.
Jobs To Do:
Replace broken side bolster foam
Order Leather Hides
Make templates
Cut & Sew
Fit and admire.
Stripping Down Pics:
seat bottom
seat foam out
lower seat frame
worn seat bolster
tilts and hinge bits
top half
cover off - still cant get the sodding harness guides out!
pile of foam
pile of covers
and thats the progress so far untill pay day.
after ive done this, im thinking of offering my services to info members who are interested in a retrim on the cheap (labour wise). i know there's a few guys who were interested so let me know if its something you'd like.
comments welcome! Last edited by Lowercase on Sat Oct 29, 2011 8:45 am; edited 1 time in total

#3: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Oct 19, 2011 2:57 pm ---- lol battenburg seats
thought about two tone like the vrs seats
or maybe
like these , maybe with black centre.
not gunna be as obvious with the recaro embroidery though, probably gunna do it in the same colour thread as the leather, so you only notice it when you look for it, claaaass.
#4: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Antknee, Location: ManchesterPosted: Wed Oct 19, 2011 2:58 pm ---- black and tan! lightest tan you can though that looks lush!
#5: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Oct 19, 2011 3:21 pm ---- jdm style inserts?
#6: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: DanPug206, Location: BirminghamPosted: Wed Oct 19, 2011 3:28 pm ---- Is that an Octavia VRs leather seats? They look nice.

yea mate. good inspiration for a retrim. though im siding against light tan as just the little sample patch i have got dirty within a day.
so im siding with the red or black at the moment.
the idea is to trim them in such a way that i can put them into any car i buy and they wont look out of place.
thats the plan anyway, but im im going through this effort, i may aswell make them a bit special aye?
#8: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: glenpring, Location: KENTPosted: Thu Oct 20, 2011 2:38 am ---- What you going to do about the warn seat foam?
#9: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:14 am ---- thankfully recaro sell replacement parts for most of their chairs and components. so the bolster foam will be replaced.
and them in gunna put a covering of duct tape on the lowers to help keep them together over time.
#10: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Thu Oct 27, 2011 9:36 am ---- had an interesting evening last night, in what was a truly a**e clenching 20 minutes when i took a sharp blade to the foam of the recaro's! but after a whole lot of swearing and sweating i managed to get the harness guides free and re glued the foam, good as new thankfully.
just got to reserch my sewing machine a bit more at the moment to see if it can handle the leather, otherwise ill be picking up an old heavy duty semi industrial model off ebay for the £100 mark.
colour wise, developments made. got a full 3 booklets of samples from the suppliers and found a really lush off black browny grey colour that i think im gunna go for with anthracite centres. something a bit different.
will post some more pics soon of progress
#11: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Andrew, Location: Black Country Ay IPosted: Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:13 am ---- Interesting project, will you be doing the back seats and door inserts to match?
#12: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:24 am ---- these will be going into a new gti ill be buying later in the year.
the gti will be stripped of:
sound deadening.
rear seats.
radio and speakers
A/C
Airbags
and plans for the rest of the interior:
-Centre console blanking on air vents and radio and smoothed.
-dashboard smoothed of the gap over the passenger airbag and air vents (keeping the one to demist the windscreen) then wrapped in leather.
- lower centre console smoothed of all uneeded bits and trimmed in leather.
- front door cards: keeping the bit along the top with the door handle, and ill be smoothing the rest flat, using a thin line around the perimiter of the origional trim so i can use the origional fitting clips. and then trimmed in leather to match
- will do a really simple smoothing and leather covering of rear door cards too.
will look nice i think, certainly does in my head.
stripped to the bare essentials, but, with nice presentation. is what im going for
#13: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:34 am ---- gunna get an old momo steering wheel too and refurb the metal and recover the leather. always wanted one of them.
#14: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Fri Oct 28, 2011 1:43 pm ---- got me a retro semi industrial sewing machine for a steal of a price of £92. comes fully serviced, refurbished motor and a pack of new heavy duty needles ready to go.
isnt it a beauty... really powerful, can sail through 5.5mm of leather so will handle the job no problem!
#15: Re: Interior Retrim PIC Heavy Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2011 7:56 am ---- so, now the machines here, i started to set up a work space, and started making a surface to sit flush around the platform on the machine. so out came the mdf and a jigsaw cutter. removed all the edges joined it together and soon it will be covered in some cheap leatherette so the fabrics will be easier to slide around.
and i was playing around on microsoft paint (because im technical me) and came up with a black and green scheme that i think im gunna go with as its different, and i like green. ill use green stitching on the black too probably.
what you think? all leather, quilted inserts. door cards, black leather top, green piping, dark grey alcantara pannel.
