#1: 206 gearbox Author: JR1981, Location: Derby PostPosted: Mon Oct 24, 2011 6:17 pm

hi help needed please. my gearbox is about dead so i need to get it replaced asap as its not even worth the risk of driving it now. Just wondering what options i have for a replacement? Its a 52 plate quiksilver. Most of the 1.4 206 boxes i have found on ebay either have, no mileage advertised (normally for a reason) or they have high mileage in the 70's-80's that is almost double what my car currently has on it.

Any help would be great.

Thanks Jay.

Have you thought about getting your own box checked?

Sounds like a very low milegae for a MA box to have given up.

They normally do 100k+ miles easily if looked after.

it was a secondhand box that i got fitted probably 2 years ago. Like an idiot i was that desperate i got it from the scrapers without even thinking about the mileage so it could be way past 100k for all i know.

when decelerating there is a fast vibrating/knocking sort of sound from the gearbox area that has got louder over the past 2 weeks. When on the power it disappears and when you dip the clutch it also disappears. I was going to change the oil until i drained it and found there were a fair amount of larger metal pieces in it and not the normal fine shavings.

You are looking at about £300 for it to be fully reconditioned or less for whatever is broken being replaced. Just had my bearings and planet gears done. It still makes a bit of a noise though when in neutral and it stops when you put the clutch in. Hard to say what it sounds like. Hard to say what it is, if you can't find a decent box get it out and have a look inside.

Better off with a 206 box the ratios might be different. All MA gearboxes should fit. Although I was going to get one from a 58 plate and a re-builder told me that the bell housing was different. Ether way the old box has to come out so I would take it out and crack it open before you buy another.

Newer 206 MA gearboxes use a cable set up for the gearchange instead of link rods Wink

right i am beginning to think this may not be the gearbox anymore. Refilled with oil today and took it out for a drive. Tried listening a bit more carefully to try and locate the sound and it seems to be more central/drivers side located than gearbox side and definitely from underneath the car. Its more of a rumbling sound and only happens on deceleration(engine braking). Happens in every gear and the speed of the sound alters with how fast you are decelerating. Depress the clutch it disappears and press the accelerator it disappears. Anybody have any idea's it's driving me crazy??

Id look at the support bearing on the os driveshaft where it passes through the engine mount.

ON a related question, where's the gearbox filler plug on these (206CC 2.0i). On the 1.4Hdi it on the end of the box visible once you take the inner wheel arch shield off .. but I'm at a loss at where it is on others! I've got a spare 1.4 box in the garage (don't ask Rolling Eyes ) and that doesn't have one either!!

What do you do when the fluid needs topping up (like when a driveshaft pops when your replacing a wishbone!) or you just want to replace the worn out sh*t that's in it now! Sad Question
