Well i finally decided to trace the problems of a slightly erratic tick over, figured that had to be the injectors, but how to check if it’s one or all four of them at home?
Firstly i decided to see if there was a problem with the injectors ohms resistance I'm not sure of the correct resistance reading needed but looked for any big difference’s, I got the following readings
(#1), 1.2 (#2) 1.3 (#3) 1.2 (#4) 1.3
figure that those are close enough to each other to be ok
Well got 4 bottles and 4 equal lengths of clear tubing drilled the tops so the tubes went in and gave me a fuel return volume reading, now disconnected the fuel leak off pipes from the injectors and connected it all up. Looked kind of funny but all looked tight and leak proof so started it up for 2 min’s on tick over and measured the fuel returned.
from my way of thinking the injector that returns the least amount of fuel is the one/s that are not or least blocked ( didn’t get ml measurements) but 1,3,4 return was high and #2 considerably lower marked with felt pen to compare later.
Has to be blocked or gummed injectors that got me thinking and had a quick look online for a diesel specialist nearby for ultrasonic cleaning, only found 1 that dealt with sending away I really wanted to have service exchange or clean and refit while you wait service, and looking at the business address was a private house Shocked not a business premises so that’s a no go IMO
Determined not to be put off looked in ultra-sonic machines and found one that just suited what i wanted and just large enough for 1 injector at a time and a good price, happy days!
Tested the sonic cleaner on a few old spanners woohoo, worked a treat so outcome the injectors dropped in the solution and 60c and left them on a cycle for 2x 8 min’s each
The crap and crud was unbelievable that came off each injector but in my haste forgot about new injector sealing washers before refitting, so cleaned them up and annealed them with a trusty blow lamp the inspected them looked A1
Refitted injectors connectors and return fuel lines and connected harness and charged the system paranoid to find leaks but had non result, Fired her up after a few fuel pump charges, then fairy liquid and water from a spray bottle to check for injector blow by and still paranoid looking for bubbles everywhere, phew got non, tick over now seams steady as a rock around 780 without anyfluctuations, The test drive feels so much more responsive and instant quicker throttle response Wink
A quick look under the bonnet hooked up the fuel return gizmo to the fuel returns and gave her another few min’s on tick over then checked the returned fuel for each injector, all very similar returns form each and a little less than the first checks comparing the two, connected everything back and closed the bonnet happy with an afternoons tinkering
