I thought it was the cam belt that casues damage if it goes.

Yeah if it jams the bottom crank pulley
Which recently happened to a 2004 VW Passat at work. Destroyed the engine.

or the cambelt pulleys or cambelt itself if shredding. Just be sure you have the right culprit.
