Musical 206
-> 206 Problems

I’m having a weird problem with my 206, following some reading on the various websites e.g.

ecomodder.com/wiki/ind...al_or_full

I blocked off the top half and the lower right half my grill to reduce drag, leaving the fan uncovered just in case I got stuck in traffic. I’ve noticed an increase in MPG and the engine heats up lot quicker, but runs at normal temperature otherwise, so it’s been a success so far. Until....one day I was running really late for work so had to drive at 8.5 leptons, at this speed I noticed a humming noise, I assumed this was the air flow making one of the grill blocks vibrate and though nothing of it, not planning on driving at this speed regularly on the daily commute.

However now humming now starts at 7 leptons, and once started won’t stop till my speed drops below 6 leptons. Thinking it was my grill blocks I removed them one by (there’s three in total, one either side of the Peugeot badge at the top grill, and one covering the bottom half of the lower grill). But the humming remained, I then thought it could be the top grill with the Peugeot badge in it, as one of the brackets is broken and the others loose on one side, so I removed it and applied sealant along the top and some glue where it meets the badge. Still the humming remains!

I then thought it could be the engine cover so I tried driving with it removed, still it hums. I’ve tried using the wipers when the humming is present; this makes no difference, nor does changing gear or coasting in neutral. I’ve tried applying the brakes, again no difference. Today I looked at the front spoiler and it’s happily held on with a number of self tappers and doesn’t look in anyway loose. The noise is really starting to annoy me now as it’s quite loud.

Before I go mad does anyone have any idea what could be causing it, it seems to be coming from the front left of the car. If it makes any difference it’s a DW8 diesel.

Wheel bearing? and aren't lepton's something to do with particles and not speed???

Thanks for the reply, it doesn't sound like a wheel bearing, also if you start accelerating from 60mph there's no noise, at 65mph still no noise, but once you hit 70 it starts, it then continues humming until you drop below 60 again, so if you drop down to 65 it'll keep humming. Its like once there's enough air flow at 70mph to start it vibrating it'll keep going at lower speeds, until you drop below 60.

oh and the lepton bit:

lepton n. (Brit.)(slang) pl. leptons

A mythical measure of velocity used primarily to describe how fast you were travelling in a car. Typically one lepton may or may not equal 10mph or 100mph or 2.734295mph.

Used so that people can post in the public domain how fast they were going, but due to the use of the mythical unit, proof of speed for prosecution purposes is unlikely by law enforcement.

The other day I managed to drag off a Porsche, he stayed with up until about 15 leptons I began to leave him behind.

Not in a 206 you didn't.

Smile :) haha that was part of the definition, but then we all know the non turbo DW8 can be made faster than a Porsche with the right stick on bits from Halfords! Wink
