"whining/ howling timing belt"
-> 206 Problems

#1: "whining/ howling timing belt" Author: DavidPCoates, Location: UK PostPosted: Mon Nov 21, 2011 7:35 am

I have revently changed the head gasket, also changing the aux belt and the timing belt.
However I didnt change the timing belt tensioner, where first started I had a loud "howling", i removed aux belt, the noise remained, then removed covers and again noise remained, therefore I guess the problem is either timing belt or tensioner.

Anyone have similar expereince, I loosened the belt a little and the problem reduced, but didnt go away.

Thanks

Dave

at work we had the same thing on a vauxhall frontera it was the tensioner bearing was completely nackered, did you change the water pump when the timing belt was changed

cam belt drives the water pump.

Normally its advised to change the water pump at the same time as the cambelt because the new tighter cambelt can very quickly wear out an old water pump which could be the cause of the problem or could be a tensioner.

These are only guesses obviously as i cant see or hear the car.
