#1: Quicksilver to GTi > Progress (updated 18/04/12) Author: martinius88, Location: Rushden, Northants PostPosted: Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:27 am
    ----
So I though it was about time to start a progress thread on my Pug (Beavis), I firstly purchased a 1.4 8v quicksilver back in October 2010 as I had an unfortunate accident with a Mondeo in my Corsa that had about 2000 miles on the clock when I hit it Sad bad times!!

So here is the 206 I bought, this is whilst its still at the garage and had only been there for a few hours as it was taken part exchange, so wasn't cleaned or even priced at this time.

The missus seems to love washing the car Smile saves me a job

So the first real thing of note that I changed were the wheels, from mini 14" Nimrods to 16" ones which I got at a bargain price, but for obvious reasons as they were heavily kerbed... my intention was to get them refurbed two at a time but I never got around to it.

image hosting

I then purchased some SP arches from shell-vt and fitted them... I know the car almost looks a different colour in this picture, not sure what was with the camera!!

I then wanted to get some angel eyes, I opted for the black ones made by Ultra as I had heard they were the best ones (wiring up the rings is very simple if anybody wants help, then feel free to ask).

I didnt like the yellowy colour of the side lights so I got some LED's, I think SMD with 5 LED's on, they do the job and I think they look good.

image host

and here they are turned off.

So this is how the quicksilver was standing

image hosting

I had also added a Sportex backbox the 3" round one, it sounded good, but unfortunately I have no pictures from the back once I had fitted it, but I'm sure you can all guess what it looked like.... an exhaust?!

I then came across an 02 plate GTi 138 for sale, and the guy was a trader, and was happy to do a swap with my quicksilver plus a small amount of cash. So I went for it, I took off the lights and arches from the quicksilver, but left the wheels as I had sold the mini nimmies already. I kept my head unit and other bits, but left in there my speakers, but I wasn't too worried, as the 6 x 9's were in the parcel shelf... which is CR*P anyway and with the GTi I wanted to replace all four standard ones not just the front.

So here is the GTi.... play spot the difference....

jpeg image hosting

Clearly I put on the lights and arches from the Quicksilver, so next up I decided to paint the callipers, I had no idea what colour to go for to went for a blue... in fact it was more the Mrs's choice, now she feels like she did something so keeps her happy. So you know, the first picture was far from finished.

I the took delivery of a Ph2 bootstrip, and also some black rear lexus lights.... (I await a slating...but I got the black ones not the chrome ones) I think they look good and not cr*ppy like the 'normal' lexarse lights.

image hosting jpeg

Also some smoked black LED side repeaters, but again no pictures of that, I'll try to get some this evening and add them in, also I replaced the number plates, and yes I know they're may be on the edge of legality, but I had the exact same design on the Quicksilver and the guy at my MOT place said they were fine as they were readable and therefore he deemed them legal. So happy days and I got them again for the GTi.

I'm currently awaiting delivery of a front upper Strut brace (for looks) and also these Front Speakers and these Rear speakers to replace all the standard speakers, I'm also looking for an amp, but I want some kind of mini one, so that it can be mounted somewhere in the front to power the front speakers.

Other then that, I'm not sure what I want to do, I think lowering is one thing thats definitely on the list but not sure how far to go, just want it to site nicely on the arches, but not stupidly low and I dont want to lose performance.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers Smile

Nice car, but if you like your paintwork to be nice, don't use those brush things to clean your car!

Yeah I'm quite happy with the lexarse lights. Thought about de-wipering the rear, but I also like it being there, so I'm undecided on that. Yeah the fog is on the list and also at some point the 3rd brake too, panel filter is ordered. I don't think I'm going to colour code, but I might have a play on photoshop (my job involves alot of this) and might do the strip and bumper bits gloss black but again will have to see.
Bonnet grill is most defiantly on the cards, but they're not cheap, lol!! And I like the idea of masking the front fogs, but no idea how to do that, but sure I can find it on here somewhere pretty easily!!

For standard road use, whats better, just springs or coilovers? I want to drop about 35-40mm.

I know, that one there that was used, is very VERY soft though, but I wont be using one on the GTi now. It's just it keeps the Mrs's happy haha, like a kid in a sweet shop!!

I have had issues with my coilies. I find they are very hard and have really made my car a harsh ride but it handles like a beaut!! I have Gaz Coilovers and rear shocks. I have heard others with coilovers havent had such a dramatic ride discomfort so mayb I just bought some track designed ones or something. Dont regret them though. It just feels more sporty.

Ah ok, I have been looking at hte FK AK Steet ones, as there are some on ebay for £130ish, but I would need to get them fitted properly. I do most things myself, but wouldnt want to mess that up haha!! I might get the coilovers then take it pug1off and get them fitted and the torsion bar sorted all at the same time. FK AK Street any good?

Sportex back box ordered, I went for a 3" oval one, so hopefully it will be pretty much the same size as the original and will fit nicely, I'd like to get a heat plate or something though, to save the bumper from and melting that might occur, anybody know of these or will I have to make one myself?

Speakers have arrived, and also the strut brace, these should all be fitted over the weekend (depending on if I'm injured after rugby on saturday LOL)

I went for speakers from theloudest.co.uk, NOT because of the name or because they claim to be 'the loudest' but because I've had them before, and also their 6 x 9's and I was might impressed for how good they are for the pice, and funnily enough they do pump out some serious volume aswell!

they look like this...

anybody selling any coilovers at a decent price? I want to try to get to KrisB to get the torsion bar done next week, unless there is anybody around the bedford area who can do it for a decent price?

Thanks, a few bits still to do, managed to get three of the 4 speakers fitted last night, but it go to dark and I was starting to get impatient so I decided to leave the last one until today! Hopefully the back box arrives today so that can be fitted, hopefully before it gets dark though!! lol Also need to paint the strut brace and clean it up a bit then then will hopefully be on this weekend too.

Yes there is a decent scrape on the arch... not my doing, but this will hopefully be done when I get the bumpers and bits CC'd

I'm quite happy with how it sits now and I haven't lost too much in the way of ride quality. Let me know what you think. Its 45-50mm at the front and I don't know about the rear, what do people think it is?

Things to do...
Rear callipers still need painting and front need another coat!!
Black smoked 3rd brake light, rear fog and front fogs
Maybe de-wiper..???
Wheel refurb and colour, probably in Gun mental, suggestions welcome.
Colour code bump strips all round.

Thanks for looking.

No real updates for now, I have ordered a straight through 'race tube'.
More importantly, I am trying to get some upgraded brake pads and discs.... WHYY oh WHYYY is it sooo difficult to find the correct ones to be certain that they fit!!! If somebody would be kind enough to send me a link to the ones I need, I can provide VIN if needed!! I wanted either Ferodo ds2500 or Mintex1144 for the front only, and also BremoMax discs also for the front only!!
Thank

-The rear end is too low (for me, the arch gap should be roughly the same front and rear).

-The exhaust sticks out too far. Just needs knocking back so it doesn't stick proud of the bumper.

-Lose the lexus lights and refit the originals

-

Yeah, I don't like how the rear is sitting at the moment, but need to find the time to book it back in to get it taken up a bit!!
The exhaust will be fine once I get the lower engine mount sorted which allows the engine to rock to such an extend that the CAT slowly pushes back the rest of the exhaust which then makes the tailpipe sick out and look a bit stupid really.

I quite like the lights, I've had good comments from friends who have driven behind me who said they look good, so for now at least they will be staying. Smile

How much were the upgraded speakers you got? Are they a lot better than standard? Ran off an amp or the HU? I'm looking at upgrading mine.

Hi, I have used these speaker in pretty much every car I've had, so I find them really really good, create a great quality sound. I must warn you, that fitting them to the front is a bit of a pain due to the plastic surround that is installed by pug from factory, but once you chop this out so they fit and also use a mount of 20mm then they fit lovely and are a pleasure to my ears. The back fits in straight away like a glove.

Currently running direct from the HU but they are even better with an amp which is my plan for next few weeks.

I bought mine from their shop on eBay stores.ebay.co.uk/The-...d=70079008 where it's cheaper than their website, www.theloudest.com

I've also had both varieties of their 6x9's which I cannot recommend enough, they're amazing!!
Hope this helps, let me know if you want any more info.

Small update: Have bought and had sprayed a badgeless front grill, which looks smart, but now need to get the gap in the bonnet filled and coloured!! CC'd the bump strips (apart from the front, which I need to get done) have a race tube to be fitted but that can wait until the snow has gone as I dont fancy laying on the floor in the cold and wet! Will get pics up soon!

Havent updated this in a while,so got a couple of pics here,

Number plates have returned to standard, after a £60 fine Sad I'm now very clear on the laws surrounding the plates, policeman was a decent chap as well and very interested about the car asking 101 questions.

Got my brother to knock these up with his vinyl cutter.

Also I have fitted a Scorpion cat back exhaust system (full stainless) can see it in the pic in garage, carbon mirror caps from a 180, which you can see in one of the pics, an SP chrome bonnet vent and replaced the speedo cluster for a black and chrome one which looks much better then the white one I had before. I will get some more pics ASAP.

Plans/things to do:

- Redo roof lining in black and also the pillars
- Colour code the front bumper (waiting for delivery)
- Change dials to blue and de-tango A/C and MFD
- Custom trim door cards (issues with pay pal holding this up)
- Thinking of cat cams and re-map... suggestions on this one?
- Roof in gloss black, opinions?

Thats all for now. Comments and opinions appreciated.

It's very good, not too hard not to soft, nice and responsive through the corners, I like it.

Yeah the pro-kit. I bought them from demon-tweeks for about £80 but that seems to have gone up now to about £100. I'd double check but dont have the car anymore or any of the paperwork ie receipts and stuff like that.

Heres the new ride.
